THE FOURTH SUNDAY
OF ORDINARY TIME
January 31/February 1, 2009

What is the most important lesson Jesus has taught you?

Gospel Reflection (Mark 1:21-28): In this reading Jesus teaches and acts with authority. In this first miracle recorded by Mark, Jesus shows his power over the forces of evil. Even the evil spirit gives witness to Jesus, recognizing him as “the Holy One of God” and submitting to his commands.
We should learn to trust in Jesus and his loving care for us. We should listen each day for his quiet voice in our hearts, urging us to trust him and to do what he asks.

Discussion Points for Gospel: What are our attitudes toward authority in our lives? Are our attitudes toward Jesus the same as or different from our attitudes toward other authorities? Does Jesus “authorize” our thoughts and actions? How or when?

Sunday Scripture Readings
Reflection on the Scriptures has become more and more a part of basic Christian spirituality. At times we would like to return to the Sunday Scriptures at home, but we do not have the missalette with us. At other times we may be interested in seeing just what came before or immediately after the reading for the day to gain more insights.
To encourage this encounter with the Scriptures, we will be including in the bulletin the scripture reading references for the current Sunday and the following Sunday. In addition, in our on-line bulletin we will have the actual links to the readings.

QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK
The Fourth Sunday of Ordinary Time

Mark’s Gospel often highlights the notion that the power of Jesus is superior to the power of Satan.

Adults: In what ways have I experienced the presence of Jesus in my life, freeing me from the power of evil?

Children: Do I remember to pray to Jesus for help when I am tempted?

FYI: The 2008 financial statements are being sent out this week.

LITURGY BITS AND BYTES
 Baptism

Baptism is a sacrament that celebrates our faith in Christ. Obviously, infants are in no position to make a faith decision to accept Christ’s salvation. They cannot and do not choose to become members of the church. Parents who present their children to be baptized, therefore, accept the responsibility for their child to learn about God and to develop a sense of the holy through their involvement with a faith community. The rite of baptism makes it very clear that parents present their children to Christ and to the church. In turn, the church blesses the parents as the child’s first Christian teachers. In reflecting on this awesome task, parents should remember that they have received God’s special call and God’s special grace to help to form their children in the faith.

RESPECT LIFE - “By defending the embryo, we defend the idea of human life as having inherent dignity. If we dismiss the embryo as a form of life we can destroy at will for supposed medical benefits, we leave little basis for defending other unpopular or marginalized members of the human race once someone sees them as being worth more dead than alive.”
(Richard Doerflinger, Associate Director of USCCB’s Secretariat of Pro-Life Activities)
