THE FIFTH SUNDAY
OF ORDINARY TIME
February 7/8, 2009

How do you define your purpose in life?

Gospel Reflection (Mark 1:29-39): Mark describes for us how Jesus’ day begins and ends with taking care of others. He heals Simon’s mother-in-law, he cures others who are sick, he drives out demons from those who are possessed. He comforts the downhearted and discouraged. The crowds follow him wherever he goes. Even when he goes off to a lonely place to pray and be renewed, Jesus is tracked down by his disciples who say, “Everybody is looking for you!” Without complaint, Jesus responds at once by heading for the nearby villages to heal and preach and comfort.

Discussion Points for Gospel: When you are busy or tired, how do you respond to family members who want your help or attention? Why is it sometimes hard for us to respond to others’ needs? Who or what can remind us to be more loving and patient with others around us?
When you hear about people who are sick, lonely, or discouraged, what do you do? How do you think today’s gospel story might inspire you to be more like Jesus?

Sunday Scripture Readings
Reflection on the Scriptures has become more and more a part of basic Christian spirituality. At times we would like to return to the Sunday Scriptures at home, but we do not have the missalette with us. At other times we may be interested in seeing just what came before or immediately after the reading for the day to gain more insights.
To encourage this encounter with the Scriptures, we will be including in the bulletin the scripture reading references for the current Sunday and the following Sunday. In addition, in our on-line bulletin we will have the actual links to the readings.

QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK
The Fifth Sunday of Ordinary Time

Mark begins the ministry of Jesus with healings and exorcisms. In the Gospel of Luke, Jesus’ ministry begins with his proclamation of his mission to the poor and the marginalized. Both Gospels reveal that God is never divorced from human pain. As Jesus moved through the hectic crowd bringing consolation and hope, God moves in our midst, offering restoring strength.

Adults: How has a difficult time in my life become a source of strength, hope and healing?

Children: When have I asked Jesus for help in the past, and how did he answer my prayer?

PALMS FOR ASHES - Please bring your blessed palms to church. They can be placed in the marked basket between now and Sunday evening, February 22. These blessed palms will be used to make the ashes for Ash Wednesday, February 25.

LITURGY BITS AND BYTES
 Baptism -- Journey

Every baptism is a new beginning. It is the first formal step on the journey to being a full and complete Christian. Is that journey ever complete? Probably not. We continue Sunday after Sunday to be molded into the Body of Christ. Actually, the season of Lent has as its purpose the renewal of our baptism commitment. The more we understand this approach to the sacrament of baptism, the more we will appreciate the importance of our weekly experience of a faith community. That’s what connects us and supports our spiritual growth.
