SIXTH SUNDAY
OF ORDINARY TIME
February 13-14, 2010

Gospel Reflection : Luke 6:17, 20-26: You might have noticed that this gospel reading sounds very similar to Matthew’s account of the eight beatitudes in Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount. In Luke’s account today, Jesus names four categories of people who are “blest.” They are: the poor who place their trust in God; those who hunger for God and God’s reign; those who weep because there is so much suffering and evil in the world; and those who are persecuted because they live their faith.
Jesus then names four categories of people who will suffer misery because they do not put their trust in God. They are: the rich; the well-fed; the uncaring; and those who are accepted because they live by the world’s values instead of the gospel. These people have woes because they may forget that we must all be dependent on God and not on things.
Discussion Points:
(--Sadlier “We Believe” www.webelieve.web.com)
Many of us may be in the “Woe” category. We’d like to have money, we like to be well-fed rather than hungry, we like life to be pleasant and happy rather than sad, and we would like others to speak well of us. How can we be in the “Blest” category? The poor, the hungry, the sad, and the rejected may not feel very blest! Why would we want to join them?
Does Jesus mean that we should all be poor, hungry, sad, and rejected? What Jesus is saying is: these people have nothing and no one but God. Of course God cares about them! That is why they are blest! And we are most like God when we care, too!

Sunday Scripture Readings
Reflection on the Scriptures has become more and more a part of basic Christian spirituality. At times we would like to return to the Sunday Scriptures at home, but we do not have the missalette with us. At other times we may be interested in seeing just what came before or immediately after the reading for the day to gain more insights.
To encourage this encounter with the Scriptures, we will be including in the bulletin the scripture reading references for the current Sunday and the following Sunday. In addition, in our on-line bulletin we will have the actual links to the readings.

QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK
Sixth Sunday of Ordinary Time

To be "poor" involves a state of dependence. Those who realize their need for God are blessed; those who feel self-sufficient are to be pitied. No one takes joy in being insulted or persecuted, but such treatment is part of the cost of discipleship.
Adults: How do I really feel about this way to measure happiness? Do I "buy into" this set set of values of the Reign of God?

Children: When have I felt sad or angry because my friends did not understand my religion?

ASH WEDNESDAY
Ash Wednesday is the first day of Lent and occurs forty-six days (forty days not counting Sundays) before Easter. Ash Wednesday gets its name from the practice of placing ashes on the foreheads of the faithful as a sign of repentance. The ashes used are gathered after the Palm Crosses from the previous year’s Palm Sunday are burned. On Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, Roman Catholics between the ages of 18 and 59 are permitted to consume only one full meal, which may be supplemented by two smaller meals, which together should not equal the full meal. Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are also days of abstinence from meat (for those Catholics age 14 and over), as are all Fridays in Lent. Some Roman Catholics continue fasting during the whole of Lent, as was the Church’s traditional requirement, concluding only after the celebration of the Easter Vigil.

LENTEN REGULATIONS - Abstinence from meat is to be observed by all Catholics 14 years of age and older on Ash Wednesday and on all Fridays during Lent. - Fasting is to be observed on Ash Wednesday by all Catholics who are 18 and older but not yet 59. Those who are bound by this may take only one full meal. Two small meals are permitted if necessary to maintain strength according to one’s needs, but eating solid foods between meals is not permitted.
GENERAL OBSERVANCES DURING LENT
* The faithful are exhorted to maintain a spirit of penance and prayer during the Lenten season. Spiritual activities like attending daily Mass and receiving Holy Communion, reading passages from the Bible, saying the family rosary and keeping aside a few minutes of the day for personal prayer and reflection help towards keeping a prayerful spirit.
* The Stations of the Cross are recited every Friday during Lent. Please make it a point to attend the service along with your family members and encourage your friends to do so as well.
* The faithful are encouraged to do acts of penance and charity during the Lenten season beyond what is prescribed by law. It is commendable to abstain from smoking, watching too much television, indulging in idle talk, etc. Charity includes almsgiving, kindness, concern and heplfulness towards all, especially the old, the sick and the unfortunate.
* Parents must to see to it that minors, though not bound by the law of fast and abstinence, are educated in the authentic sense of penance and encouraged to do acts of penance suitable to their age.
* All members of the faithful are encouraged to avail themselves of the Sacrament of Reconciliation (Confession), since it is a true encounter with the loving, forgiving Saviour, Who takes away the burden of our sin, forgives our failing and is the source of peace and joy.

LENTEN RESOURCES - Lenten prayer materials are available in the gathering space in church. These materials are for young children as well as for adults and families.

Prayer for WORLD MARRIAGE DAY
“Heavenly Father, we thank you for your tremendous gift of the sacrament of marriage. Enable us to grow in our intimacy with you and with each other. Teach us the beauty of forgiveness so we may become more and more one in heart, mind and body. Strengthen our communication with each other and help us become living signs of your love. Help us to be examples of commitment, love and service to our families and children. Make us a sign of unity which Jesus prays for at the Last Supper. We open ourselves to guidance of your Holy Spirit, who empowers us to love in Jesus’ name and walk in his footsteps. Amen.”
