FIRST SUNDAY OF LENT
February 20/21, 2010

Name some of the hungers that people experience. How can we nourish them?

Gospel Reflection: Luke 4:1-13: Lent is a period of forty days during which the whole Church renews itself through prayer and fasting. Today we are reminded that the Israelites wandered for forty years in the desert after God led them out of captivity. We are now observing the forty days of Lent. During the Easter Triduum, we will celebrate being led from slavery into freedom.
According to today’s gospel, Jesus retreated to the desert for forty days to prepare for his mission after being baptized by John the Baptist. Luke dramatically describes what happened to Jesus while he was alone in that deserted place. The devil tempts Jesus with promises of bread (a symbol for material comforts), of power (authority over others), and of false glory (to be gained by daring to test God). But Jesus defeats the devil by defending himself with God’s word from the Old Testament. Even then the devil does not give up. He “awaits another opportunity” to tempt Jesus.
Discussion Points: Look up the Scriptural quotes Jesus uses. They are all from the Book of Deuteronomy 8:3; 6:13; and 6:16. How might you use one of these quotes to protect yourself in a time of temptation?

Sunday Scripture Readings
Reflection on the Scriptures has become more and more a part of basic Christian spirituality. At times we would like to return to the Sunday Scriptures at home, but we do not have the missalette with us. At other times we may be interested in seeing just what came before or immediately after the reading for the day to gain more insights.
To encourage this encounter with the Scriptures, we will be including in the bulletin the scripture reading references for the current Sunday and the following Sunday. In addition, in our on-line bulletin we will have the actual links to the readings.

QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK
First Sunday of Lent

Faith draws us into God’s truth and, ultimately, to full surrender into God’s hands. We give ourselves over to God, who has given himself to us through Jesus Christ and in the power of the Holy Spirit.
Adults: What areas of my life do I need to fully surrender into God’s hands?

Children: How does Jesus show us a way to be close to our heavenly Father?

PRAYER & MEDITATION BOOKLETS
The Living Faith booklets are available at the bulletin boards in church. The months of January, February and March are included in this issue. We also have available the February issue of Living with Christ. These particular booklets are very well done. Each issue is $2.00, or you can purchase a yearly subscription for $15.00; contact the church office for more information.

STATIONS OF THE CROSS DURING LENT
Fridays, 6:00 PM

LENT: THE TERMS
Lent is an Anglo-Saxon word meaning “spring.” The season lasts from Ash Wednesday until the Mass of the Lord’s Supper on Holy Thursday.
Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent, often observed by receiving a cross of ashes on the forehead at Mass.
Fasting, Abstinence, Almsgiving, Self-denial and Penance refer to the Christian practice of intentionally giving one’s time, energy and possessions for others, especially the needy, as Christ gave himself for us.
Holy Week includes the days from Palm Sunday through Easter.
Palm or Passion Sunday has contrasting names, one because of Jesus’ triumphant entry into Jerusalem (to the waving palm branches), the other because this Sunday begins Jesus’ days of suffering and death.
Paschal Triduum, from the Latin for “three days,” extends from evening Holy Thursday through Easter Sunday.
Maundy Thursday (Holy Thursday) gets its name from Jesus’ “new commandment” (mandatum in Latin), to love one another, which he spoke during the Passover meal when he washed his disciples’ feet and instituted the Holy Eucharist.
LENTEN RESOURCES - Lenten prayer materials are available in the gathering space in church. These materials are for young children as well as for adults and families.

LITURGY BITS AND BYTES
Pelican

Some Christian art uses the symbol of the pelican. The pelican is a symbol of the redeemer and is found in early Christian art of all kinds. The Pelican was believed to wound itself in order to feed its young with its own blood. In the Medieval hymn by St. Thomas Aquinas “Adoro Te Devote,” Jesus is addressed as the “Pelican of mercy who cleanses us with his own precious blood.” During communion, we remember that we are nourished by the Lord with his own Body and Blood.
