- QUESTIONS OF THE
WEEK
- First Sunday
of Lent
-
- Faith draws us into Gods
truth and, ultimately, to full surrender into Gods hands.
We give ourselves over to God, who has given himself to us through
Jesus Christ and in the power of the Holy Spirit.
- Adults: What areas of my life do I need
to fully surrender into Gods hands?
Children: How does Jesus show us a way to be close
to our heavenly Father?

- STATIONS OF THE
CROSS DURING LENT
Fridays, 6:00 PM
- LENT: THE TERMS
Lent is an Anglo-Saxon word meaning spring.
The season lasts from Ash Wednesday until the Mass of the Lords
Supper on Holy Thursday.
Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent,
often observed by receiving a cross of ashes on the forehead
at Mass.
Fasting, Abstinence, Almsgiving, Self-denial
and Penance refer to the Christian practice of intentionally
giving ones time, energy and possessions for others, especially
the needy, as Christ gave himself for us.
Holy Week includes the days from Palm Sunday through
Easter.
Palm or Passion Sunday has contrasting names,
one because of Jesus triumphant entry into Jerusalem (to
the waving palm branches), the other because this Sunday begins
Jesus days of suffering and death.
Paschal Triduum, from the Latin for three
days, extends from evening Holy Thursday through Easter
Sunday.
Maundy Thursday (Holy Thursday) gets its name
from Jesus new commandment (mandatum in Latin),
to love one another, which he spoke during the Passover meal
when he washed his disciples feet and instituted the Holy
Eucharist.
- LENTEN RESOURCES - Lenten
prayer materials are available in the gathering space in church.
These materials are for young children as well as for adults
and families.

Pelican
Some Christian art uses the symbol of the pelican.
The pelican is a symbol of the redeemer and is found in early
Christian art of all kinds. The Pelican was believed to wound
itself in order to feed its young with its own blood. In the
Medieval hymn by St. Thomas Aquinas Adoro Te Devote,
Jesus is addressed as the Pelican of mercy who cleanses
us with his own precious blood. During communion, we remember
that we are nourished by the Lord with his own Body and Blood.
