FIRST SUNDAY
OF LENT
February 28/March 1, 2009

How can you use this Lent to deepen your beliefs?

Gospel Reflection (Mark 1:12-15): Can you imagine a movie scene illustrating the first part of today’s gospel story? Jesus is out in the desert where he is put to the test or tempted by Satan. But he is also surrounded by wild beasts and angel attendants. It must have been an interesting forty days Jesus spent preparing to proclaim the good news. “The reign of God is at hand,” he announced in Galilee, and he called people to get ready for God’s reign by reforming their lives.
Lent can be for us like a new day dawning—just like the one Noah and his family experienced when the flood was over. It is a time for a fresh beginning and a renewal of our covenant to live as God’s people.

Sunday Scripture Readings
Reflection on the Scriptures has become more and more a part of basic Christian spirituality. At times we would like to return to the Sunday Scriptures at home, but we do not have the missalette with us. At other times we may be interested in seeing just what came before or immediately after the reading for the day to gain more insights.
To encourage this encounter with the Scriptures, we will be including in the bulletin the scripture reading references for the current Sunday and the following Sunday. In addition, in our on-line bulletin we will have the actual links to the readings.

QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK
The First Sunday of Lent

“Repent and believe” involves a process of refocusing. We need to let go of our fears and, like Jesus, be ready to stand for who we are in the face of temptation.

Adults: What can I do this Lent to deepen my trust in God as my only source of strength and peace? Is there anything hindering my spiritual growth?

Children: What can I do at home or school this Lent to be more like Jesus?

ASH WEDNESDAY COLLECTION - On behalf of the Church in Central and Eastern Europe, thank you! Because of your generous gifts, the Church will be able to build, fix, and maintain structures, educate clergy and seminarians, assist children in orphanages, publish Catholic newspapers, provide scholarships, and so much more. Your gifts will allow the Church in Central and Eastern Europe to continue to flourish and to strengthen and share its belief in the power of the Spirit of Love. Visit www.usccb.org/nationalcollections to see how your gifts are making a difference.
LIFT HIGH THE CROSS
To you, O Lord, we lift our hearts.
Teach us your ways and guide us
in your truth,
For you are God, our Savior.
For you we wait all the day.
Amen.
--adapated from Psalm 25

ANNUAL PARISH RETREAT - This year’s topic is the Year of St. Paul, and the retreat will begin this weekend when our facilitator Fr. Vinny McKiernan will speak at all Masses at St. Paul’s as well as at CTK. Check out the brochure or the bulletin for a schedule of Retreat events. Each day there will be a reflection on a passage from St. Paul, a time of quiet reflection and a time for sharing. Please give Fr. Vinny a warm welcome!
LENT: THE SYMBOLS
   Colors:
Violet is the usual color for Lent, symbolizing repentance. Red on Good Friday relates to Jesus' sacrifice, while white is the color for Easter.
Ashes placed on the forehead hint at an ancient ritual-covering oneself with ashes in penitence. Receiving the cross-shaped smudge reminds us that we are dust and is a public statement of repentance. Usually the ashes are from the previous year's Palm Sunday branches, illustrating the circle of the Church Year.

LITURGY BITS AND BYTES
 Baptism -- Baptistry

Baptism is the first and most important step on our journey into the life we have in Christ. Each time we come into church, we should be reminded in some way that it was through the sacrament of baptism that we became part of God’s family. For this reason, the preferred place for the baptistry is at the entrance to the church building. Each time you come into the church building, dip your hand into the holy water of life. The whole point of blessing ourselves as we come into the church has always been to remind ourselves of the life we share through baptism. Often Sunday celebrations use the symbol of sprinkling of holy water as part of the gathering rite. This, too, is a reminder of our baptism and the common promises we made.
