SECOND SUNDAY
OF LENT
March 7/8, 2009

How do you listen to God’s beloved Son?

Gospel Reflection (Mark 9:2-10): The story of Jesus’ Transfiguration on the mountain is a preview of great things to come. With his amazed disciples looking on, Jesus is suddenly dressed in dazzling white and his face shines like the sun. He is speaking with the long-dead prophets Moses and Elijah. These two Old Testament figures represent the Law and the Prophets. They are interrupted by a majestic voice from a cloud. And the voice says that Jesus is God’s beloved Son. The bedazzled disciples are told to “Listen to him.”
Like us, Peter, James, and John could not understand everything about Jesus overnight. It was only after his death and resurrection that they understood the meaning of his Transfiguration. Only then did they realize what it meant for the Son of Man to rise from the dead.

Discussion Points for Gospel: How are you responding to God’s command to “Listen to him” during Lent? What message from Jesus’ words or actions do you most want to share with the world? What good can come out of suffering? Explain. How do you show that you care about others who are suffering?
What does the experience of the three disciples tell us about the process of coming to know and believe in Jesus? What has helped your own relationship with Jesus to grow over the past year?

Sunday Scripture Readings
Reflection on the Scriptures has become more and more a part of basic Christian spirituality. At times we would like to return to the Sunday Scriptures at home, but we do not have the missalette with us. At other times we may be interested in seeing just what came before or immediately after the reading for the day to gain more insights.
To encourage this encounter with the Scriptures, we will be including in the bulletin the scripture reading references for the current Sunday and the following Sunday. In addition, in our on-line bulletin we will have the actual links to the readings.

QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK
Second Sunday of Lent

Only when they went apart with Jesus did the disciples glimpse something of his true identity and begin to grasp the meaning of his mission.

Adults: Am I willing to spend some dedicated time “apart” with Jesus in prayer during Lent, waiting for whatever God wishes to reveal to me?

Children: When I pray to Jesus, do I also try to be still and listen to what he is saying in my heart?

LIFT HIGH THE CROSS
To you, O Lord, we lift our hearts.
Teach us your ways and guide us
in your truth,
For you are God, our Savior.
For you we wait all the day.
Amen.
--adapated from Psalm 25

LENT: THE SYMBOLS
Forty Days of Lent parallel the 40 days which Jesus spent in fasting and prayer in the wilderness. Palm branches in ancient times signified victory and were used in triumphal processions by Romans and Jews.
Paschal or Easter Candle is a large, decorated and dates candle, lit each year at the Easter Vigil bonfire and then carried into the darkened church. Standing for the risen Savior who is the light of the world, it is then displayed prominently at services and baptisms during the year.
CHILDREN’S CHOIR for 10:30 Mass on Easter - Practice will be held on Sundays: March 8, 15, 29 and April 5 after 10:30 Mass in the CTK Parish Center Chapel. Practice will last until 12:10. Plan to attend at least 2 practices.
The NEWMAN COMMUNITY meets Wednesdays at 7:00 in the CTK Parish Center. This week is Toast to the Lord. Join us!
CATHOLIC LADIES OF COLUMBIA will meet Monday, March 9, 6:30 pm in the CTK Parish Center. Lorraine Cook (740-249-4022) and Anna Mae Dunphy are facilitating the meeting.
Treasurer Needed St. Vincent dePaul - The Society of St. Vincent dePaul Athens is in need of a Treasurer. Please call Roger Menchofer at 740-698-4133 for details. If I’m not at home, please leave message and I will return you call promptly. Thank you.
HAVE LUNCH AT GRINDERS! Parishioners dining at W.g. Grinders, 120 W Union in Athens, will receive a 10% discount on a meal if you show them our church bulletin or other information about the activity you attended at CTK.
LITURGY BITS AND BYTES
Sacrifice

Joining in one common act of worship is essential to the proper understanding of the Mass as a sacrifice. There is only one acceptable sacrifice in the New Testament – that of Christ himself. The Mass is a sacrifice because it brings us into contact with that eternal sacrifice of Christ. We share in the sacrifice by joining ourselves to Christ’s act of worship of the Father.
There are obviously great depths of meaning linked to our sharing in this sacrificial act of worship. This brings us to the heart of Christianity and the heart of the Eucharist. The death and resurrection of the Lord Jesus is the central fact of history and the central theme of Christian spirituality. Thus full, active participation in Christ’s act of worship is the basic goal of liturgy. It is through that action that we are transformed.
