FIFTH SUNDAY
OF LENT
March 20/21, 2010

What is the difference between being righteous and being self-righteous?

Gospel Reflection: (John 8:1-11) Once again the scribes and Pharisees are trying to trap Jesus. They bring him a woman caught in the act of adultery. The Law of Moses requires that the adulteress should die. If Jesus does not agree, he will look like someone who does not respect the Law of Moses.
To the Pharisees’ amazement, Jesus at first ignores them. Then he stops them in their tracks with an unexpected challenge: “Let the one among you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her.” One by one the judges and critics drop their stones and drift away. Now that they recognize their own need for forgiveness, they are not ready to condemn someone else. Neither does Jesus condemn the woman. He simply requires her to turn away from sin. Now she has a chance for a new beginning.
Discussion Points: Write down the words of Jesus on an index card: “Let the one among you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone.” Put it in a place where it can be easily seen. Then pay attention to the radio, the television, the newspaper, and your own conversations. Try to remember these words of Jesus whenever someone’s mistakes, sins, or crimes are broadcast, or whenever you are tempted to “throw a stone” of malicious gossip or scandal about someone!

Sunday Scripture Readings
Reflection on the Scriptures has become more and more a part of basic Christian spirituality. At times we would like to return to the Sunday Scriptures at home, but we do not have the missalette with us. At other times we may be interested in seeing just what came before or immediately after the reading for the day to gain more insights.
To encourage this encounter with the Scriptures, we will be including in the bulletin the scripture reading references for the current Sunday and the following Sunday. In addition, in our on-line bulletin we will have the actual links to the readings.

QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK
Fifth Sunday of Lent

The woman in the Gospel was confronted with a choice. Jesus told her clearly to go and sin no more. She could go and continue her old behavior or, instead, listen to the words of the Teacher.
Adults: How quick am I to cast the first stone? Do I make a distinction between the sin and the sinner?

Children: Do I forgive my friends when they do something that hurts me? Do I give them a second chance?

LITURGY BITS AND BYTES
Eucharistic Prayer for Lent

During the season of Lent it is appropriate to use the Second Eucharistic Prayer for Reconciliation. In the preface for this Eucharistic Prayer we pray: “In the midst of conflict and division, we know it is you who turn our minds to thoughts of peace. Your Spirit changes our hearts: enemies begin to speak to one another, those who were estranged join hands in friendship, and nations seek the way of peace together.” Christ’s acts of salvation were done to reconcile humanity to God. In this Lenten season perhaps we can focus on acts of reconciliation: in our hearts, in our family, and in our world.
