FOURTH SUNDAY
OF LENT
March 21/22, 2009

What do you find lovable in the world today?

Gospel Reflection (John 3:14-21): In teaching Nicodemus, Jesus uses a familiar story from the Old Testament (Numbers 21:4-9) about Moses. When Moses lifted up a bronze snake in the desert for all to see, those who had been bitten by snakes were healed. Jesus says that he too must be lifted up so that all might have eternal life through him. He will be lifted up on the cross. But he will also be lifted up in his resurrection and in his ascension to the Father. Whoever looks at him in faith will receive eternal life.
Followers of Jesus recognize him as the light that came into the world. They live truthfully in the light, unlike those who choose the darkness and do evil deeds.

Discussion Points for Gospel: Picture the entire world today as a patient in a doctor’s office. What might the doctor say is wrong with the world’s health? List some of the problems Jesus might point out and name some of the ways the followers of Jesus can be healers in our world.
How do members of your family, school community, and parish show that they are living in the light? What can we do to help others choose to live truthfully in the light?

Sunday Scripture Readings
Reflection on the Scriptures has become more and more a part of basic Christian spirituality. At times we would like to return to the Sunday Scriptures at home, but we do not have the missalette with us. At other times we may be interested in seeing just what came before or immediately after the reading for the day to gain more insights.
To encourage this encounter with the Scriptures, we will be including in the bulletin the scripture reading references for the current Sunday and the following Sunday. In addition, in our on-line bulletin we will have the actual links to the readings.

2009 CATHOLIC RELIEF SERVICES COLLECTION
Give Hope to Jesus in Disguise

The State Department estimates that nearly 5 million people have been displaced, forced to leave their homes, because of the war in Iraq. The CRS Collection supports resettlement services for refugees, serves victims of human trafficking, and provides pastoral care and advocacy. Of the 50,000 total refugees authorized to enter the United States in 2007, nearly one-third were helped by USCCB Migration and Refugee Services, one organization receiving funds from the Collection. The Collection also supports legal services for refugees, advocacy, relief and development, and disaster/emergency relief. When you donate to the Collection, you give hope. Please be generous in today’s Collection. Use the envelopes in your church support packet or the CRS envelopes at the bulletin boards. Visit www.usccb.org/nationalcollections to get more information on funded organizations.
LENT: THE TERMS
† Lent is an Anglo-Saxon word meaning “spring.” The season lasts from Ash Wednesday until the Mass of the Lord’s Supper on Holy Thursday.
† Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent, often observed by receiving a cross of ashes on the forehead at Mass.
† Holy Week includes the days from Palm Sunday through Easter.
† Palm or Passion Sunday has contrasting names, one because of Jesus’ triumphant entry into Jerusalem (to the waving palm branches), the other because this Sunday begins Jesus’ days of suffering and death.
† Paschal Triduum, from the Latin for “three days,” extends from evening Holy Thursday through Easter Sunday.
† Maundy Thursday (Holy Thursday) gets its name from Jesus’ “new commandment” (mandatum in Latin), to love one another, which he spoke during the Passover meal when
†Good Friday marks the events of Jesus’ trial, crucifixion, death and burial, sometimes with special Tre Ore (three-hour) observances. The altar is stripped of all decoration and the church darkened until Saturday’s Easter Vigil.
† Easter Vigil is celebrated on Holy Saturday evening after sundown; traditionally a time for baptizing, confirming and receiving new members.
† Easter, named after an ancient spring festival, is the “great Sunday,” on which each Sunday Eucharist is modeled.
† Fasting, Abstinence, Almsgiving, Self-denial and Penance refer to the Christian practice of intentionally giving one’s time, energy and possessions for others, especially the needy, as Christ gave himself for us.

ST. VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY will meet Wednesday, April 1, at 7:00 pm in the CTK Parish Center.
LITURGY BITS AND BYTES
Reconciliation

The Sacrament of Reconciliation celebrates the great gift of God’s mercy. Sometimes it seems that we concentrate too much on our own sins and not enough on God’s mercy. The Sacrament of Reconciliation is a wonderful way to strengthen our journey with the Lord. Our sins, more than anything else, weigh us down. The Sacrament of Reconciliation can be a great help as we journey together without the guilt and sin that can be very heavy to carry.
