EASTER SUNDAY
April 3/4, 2010

What in our faith do you find hard to understand? How do you help others to understand the Catholic faith?

Gospel Reflection: (John 20:1-9) Alleluia! Imagine how you would have felt if you had been Mary Magdalene or Peter or John on that first Easter morning. What thoughts and emotions would the sight of that empty tomb have aroused in you? At first, Mary Magdalene thought that Jesus’ enemies had stolen his body. Heartbroken, she ran to tell Peter and John. They raced to the tomb and found that the burial wrappings, which had encased Jesus’ body, were cast aside. Seeing this, they believed.
Discussion Points: We have heard many times about Jesus’ Resurrection. But do we truly and deeply believe it? Do our lives give evidence of the joy and peace and hope of Easter? Spend a little time today in the company of the risen Lord. Ask him to help you to truly believe in his rising, and your own. Sing him an “Alleluia!”
Does your belief in the resurrection affect your everyday life? How you treat others? An early father of the Church wrote, “A Christian should be an alleluia from head to toe!” How can you live a life of praise?

Sunday Scripture Readings
Reflection on the Scriptures has become more and more a part of basic Christian spirituality. At times we would like to return to the Sunday Scriptures at home, but we do not have the missalette with us. At other times we may be interested in seeing just what came before or immediately after the reading for the day to gain more insights.
To encourage this encounter with the Scriptures, we will be including in the bulletin the scripture reading references for the current Sunday and the following Sunday. In addition, in our on-line bulletin we will have the actual links to the readings.

QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK
Easter Sunday

The four Gospels all recount the fact that an empty tomb was discovered by a few disciples. But an empty tomb would not be enough proof that Jesus had indeed risen. All of his followers would fully come to faith through the post-Resurrection appearances of Christ.
Adults: How has my faith about the Risen Christ been nourished?

Children: If I were with Peter and the beloved disciple, what might I have thought?

R.C.I.A. CONGRATULATIONS
Since last September, we have held a combined R.C.I.A. program with St. Paul’s Church. Most Thursday evenings and a few Sunday afternoons during this time 14 members of our communities prepared for the reception of sacraments this Easter. We congratulate them and are very grateful for the model of faith they have given to us!

EASTER TIME
The fifty days from Easter Sunday to Pentecost are celebrated in joyful exultation as one feast day, or better, as one “great Sunday.” (Athanasius) These, above all others, are the days for the singing of the Alleluia. The Sundays of this season rank as the paschal Sundays, and after Easter Sunday itself, are called the Second, Third, Fourth, Fifth, Sixth and Seventh Sundays of Easter. The period of fifty sacred days ends on Pentecost Sunday. The first eight days of the Easter season make up the octave of Easter and are celebrated as solemnities of the Lord. On the fortieth day after Easter, the Ascension is celebrated. The weekdays after Ascension until the Saturday before Pentecost inclusive are a preparation for the coming of the Holy Spirit. LITURGY BITS AND BYTES
 Front Seats

Catholics are known for not sitting in the front seats at liturgy. What difference does it make? It does make a difference. If we are a celebrating family, if we try to extend hospitality to one another, if we are sensitive to those who come late, if we are trying to participate in an action that is truly ours, then we will fill the front pews as we come in. This makes full, active participation in the Liturgy easier, because it puts us closer to the focus of the action. It is our action. The closer we are, the more it feels like our action. It also leaves room for late-comers to take a seat without disturbing those already present.
