DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY
SECOND SUNDAY OF EASTER
April 10/11, 2010

How do you experience being sent by Jesus?

Gospel Reflection: (John 20:19-31) John’s account of that first Easter night is filled with drama. Jesus appears through locked doors and gives his disciples his peace. He gives them the gift of the Holy Spirit and communicates God’s power of forgiveness. Thomas, who misses out on this experience of Jesus, refuses to believe unless he can touch Jesus’ wounds. A week later he has a chance to do just that! Thomas exclaims, “My Lord and my God!” And Jesus tells us how “blest” are we who have believed in his resurrection without having seen his risen body.
Discussion Points: Thomas is remembered in the Church as “doubting Thomas.” Yet, Jesus respected his doubts, and answered them in a beautiful way. Thomas did not keep his doubts to himself. He shared them with the community and with Jesus. What can you do when you have a doubt or a question about something?
Thomas’ response to Jesus is a beautiful prayer of faith and praise: “My Lord and my God!” Pray this prayer the next time you receive holy communion. Remember that your Lord and God is with you. What are some other ways you can pray this prayer?

Sunday Scripture Readings
Reflection on the Scriptures has become more and more a part of basic Christian spirituality. At times we would like to return to the Sunday Scriptures at home, but we do not have the missalette with us. At other times we may be interested in seeing just what came before or immediately after the reading for the day to gain more insights.
To encourage this encounter with the Scriptures, we will be including in the bulletin the scripture reading references for the current Sunday and the following Sunday. In addition, in our on-line bulletin we will have the actual links to the readings.

QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK
Divine Mercy Sunday/Second Sunday of Easter

Belief in God is not the only type of belief. People also believe in such things as their abilities, in the goodness (or wickedness) of human nature, and in the hope (or despair) of things to come. What we believe affects how we live.
Adults: What do I believe about God and the world around me? How do my beliefs shape how I think and act?

Children: How does my belief in God affect how I act with my family and friends?

WORDS OF LIFE BULLETIN BRIEFS
(from the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Secretariat of Pro-Life Activities, 2010)
The human goal is not well-being but God himself, and … human life must be defended at every stage. Indeed, no one is master of his own life. Rather we are all called to treasure life and to respect it from the moment of conception to its natural end. …I express my appreciation of those who work more directly at the service of children, the sick and the elderly...

LITURGY BITS AND BYTES
 Transformation

Full, active participation means entering into the movement of the liturgy itself. Liturgy wants to transform us into the image of God’s Son. If we hold ourselves back, we hinder the action of God’s grace within us. If we try to maintain our separation from our brothers and sisters, we resist God’s efforts to form us into the one Body of Christ. If we enter into the action of the liturgy, then God can shape our minds and hearts according to the divine will. Then we will become effective instruments of God’s will in our world. Empowered by God’s grace, we who have been transformed can be used by God to transform our world.
