EASTER SUNDAY:
THE RESURRECTION OF THE
LORD

April 11/12, 2009

What “stones” block people’s rising to new life?

Gospel Reflection (John 20:1-9): Imagine the headlines that might accompany this Easter gospel: “Woman Finds Tomb Empty,” “Race to Tomb Lost by Peter,” “Burial Shroud Mysteriously Vacated.” John’s account makes it clear that Mary Magdalene was the first witness to the empty tomb. Like Peter and John, she did not at first understand that Jesus had risen from the dead.
In an historical time when women were not allowed to testify in a court of law, Jesus chose a woman to be the first witness to the empty tomb and to the risen Lord himself. The very next story in John’s Gospel tells us how Mary Magdalene meets the risen Jesus and he sends her to announce to the disciples, “I have seen the Lord” (John 20:18).
Whenever we hear this or any other Easter gospel proclaimed, we can rejoice that we too have been chosen as witnesses that Jesus is the Son of God who has risen from the dead.

Discussion Points for Gospel: Why do you think Mary Magdalene, Peter and John did not at first know what to make of the empty tomb? If you had been among them, what might you have seen as a “clue” inside the tomb? How do you think John interpreted this clue? Name some of the things this reading reveals to you about these three disciples.
Like the first disciples, we are not always completely fearless and faithful witnesses to the risen Jesus. But he has chosen us just the same! Name one quality or skill you can use to help others experience the joy of following Jesus.

Sunday Scripture Readings
Reflection on the Scriptures has become more and more a part of basic Christian spirituality. At times we would like to return to the Sunday Scriptures at home, but we do not have the missalette with us. At other times we may be interested in seeing just what came before or immediately after the reading for the day to gain more insights.
To encourage this encounter with the Scriptures, we will be including in the bulletin the scripture reading references for the current Sunday and the following Sunday. In addition, in our on-line bulletin we will have the actual links to the readings.

QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK
Easter Sunday

The Risen Christ is witnessed in many ways and in various settings in the Gospels.
Adults: How well do I recognize the presence of the Risen Christ in the poor, in the sacraments, and in the Church?

Children: Do I remember that Jesus is alive in my heart and I can always tell him that I love him?

R.C.I.A. CONGRATULATIONS
Since last September, we have held a combined R.C.I.A. program with St. Paul’s and St. Mary’s of the Hills churches. Most Thursday evenings and a few Sunday afternoons during this time 12 members of our communities prepared for the reception of sacraments this Easter. We congratulate them and are very grateful for the model of faith they have given to us!
Michele Clouse and Todd Zorn will receive the Sacraments of Baptism, First Eucharist and Confirmation.
The remaining 10 individuals will be welcomed into St. Paul’s Church or St. Mary’s of the Hills.
EASTER TIME
The fifty days from Easter Sunday to Pentecost are celebrated in joyful exultation as one feast day, or better, as one “great Sunday.” (Athanasius) These, above all others, are the days for the singing of the Alleluia. The Sundays of this season rank as the paschal Sundays, and after Easter Sunday itself, are called the Second, Third, Fourth, Fifth, Sixth and Seventh Sundays of Easter. The period of fifty sacred days ends on Pentecost Sunday. The first eight days of the Easter season make up the octave of Easter and are celebrated as solemnities of the Lord. On the fortieth day after Easter, the Ascension is celebrated. The weekdays after Ascension until the Saturday before Pentecost inclusive are a preparation for the coming of the Holy Spirit. LITURGY BITS AND BYTES
Easter

It’s here! The great feast of Easter is upon us! Alleluia! Easter is, without a doubt, the biggest feast of the Church year. It’s HUGE! We have taken six weeks of Lent to prepare. Now we will take eight weeks to celebrate the reality of Easter. The church is filled with an atmosphere of joy. The new life of spring that comes from the earth is yet another sign of the Easter mystery. Easter is a constant reminder that, like the flower that comes forth from the seed buried in the ground, our faith is a promise of resurrection. The Easter season will continue until Pentecost Sunday.
