THIRD SUNDAY OF EASTER
April 17/18, 2010

At what times in your life do you feel Jesus’ presence most clearly?

Gospel Reflection: (John 21:1-19) The title of this wonderful story from John’s Gospel might be “Surprise Picnic at the Beach.” In a very human way, it shows the great love Jesus and his friends had for one another. While the disciples are out fishing, the risen Christ appears on the shore at Lake Tiberias. They are anchored at a distance and do not recognize him. But when they follow his advice and wind up with a sagging net full of fish, John figures out that the stranger is Jesus. Coming ashore, they enjoy the picnic breakfast Jesus has prepared for them.
Although our reading stops after the meal itself, we know from the rest of the Gospel that Jesus called Peter aside after they ate. He asked Peter to “feed my lambs. Tend my sheep.”
Discussion Points: Reread the passages in this gospel passage in which Jesus tells the apostles to lower their net on the other side of the boat. Why do you think the apostles took Jesus’ advice? Suppose they had had the know-it-all attitude, “Well, what does Jesus know about fishing? He was a carpenter, not a fisherman. We’re the professionals here!” Where would this arrogance have gotten them?
Saint Benedict told his monks to be sure to ask the youngest in the monastery for advice, because often God reveals his will to the “least likely” person. What does this tell you about seeking an answer to a problem you might have?

Sunday Scripture Readings
Reflection on the Scriptures has become more and more a part of basic Christian spirituality. At times we would like to return to the Sunday Scriptures at home, but we do not have the missalette with us. At other times we may be interested in seeing just what came before or immediately after the reading for the day to gain more insights.
To encourage this encounter with the Scriptures, we will be including in the bulletin the scripture reading references for the current Sunday and the following Sunday. In addition, in our on-line bulletin we will have the actual links to the readings.

QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK
Third Sunday of Easter

Three times Jesus asks Peter to feed his sheep. Although this triple call mirrors Peter’s triple denial, Jesus does not intend to embarrass Peter but to heal him. Accepting Christ’s renewed invitation, Peter moves forward to lead the Church.

Adults: With whom do I sense resentment or bad will? Am I open to reconcile with that person?

Children: Do I know that no matter how many times I have done wrong God will give me another chance?

WORDS OF LIFE BULLETIN BRIEFS
(from the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Secretariat of Pro-Life Activities, 2010)
The Church offers the world a positive and inspiring vision of human life, the beauty of marriage and the joy of parenthood. It is rooted in God’s infinite, transforming and ennobling love for all of us, which opens our eyes to recognize and love his image in our neighbour. … Be sure to present this teaching in such a way that it is recognized for the message of hope that it is. All too often the Church’s doctrine is perceived as a series of prohibitions and retrograde positions, whereas the reality, as we know, is that it is creative and life-giving, and it is directed towards the fullest possible realization of the great potential for good and for happiness that God has implanted within every one of us.
~ Pope Benedict XVI, Ad Limina Address to the Bishops of Scotland (February 5, 2010)

LITURGY BITS AND BYTES
 Asperges

Many parishes use the rite of sprinkling at every Mass during the Easter season because this blessing is so appropriate during this time of baptismal renewal. At the beginning of every funeral, the Presider blesses the casket with holy water and says, “In the waters of Baptism N. died with Christ and rose with him to new life. May he/she now share in Christ’s eternal glory.” Holy water is found at the entrance to the church to remind us that it was through Baptism that we entered the community called church. During this rite of sprinkling some people cringe and duck to avoid getting wet, while others beam with joy and excitement. Both reactions are appropriate. Baptism makes us one with Christ in His death and resurrection. We cringe at what it calls us to do: die to self. We are overjoyed at what it makes us: children of one Father, members of Christ’s body, heirs of the kingdom. In the words of the Peace Prayer of St. Francis, our baptism promises us that “it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.”
