- FOURTH SUNDAY
OF EASTER
May 2/3, 2009
-
- What does your
parish do for ecumenism and interfaith relations?
-
- Gospel Reflection (John 10:11-18): When Jesus wanted to describe himself, he did not
compare himself to a magnificent king or a powerful ruler. He
said, I am the good shepherd. And the people of his
time knew immediately that he was speaking of a humble caretaker
of the flock that depended on him for survival. Some shepherds
work only for pay and leave their sheep unprotected. The good
shepherd lays down his life to save them. No one forces him to
do so. He chooses to give his life for the sheep he knows by
name and loves to the end.
The Good Shepherd looks forward to the day
when all people will be one flock. They will recognize
his voice and be gathered into his fold.
Discussion Points for Gospel: In ancient Israel, a good
shepherd was admired for his courage, dedication, and ability
to provide everything his flock required. Who do you think might
be considered good shepherds in todays world? Why? In what
ways do you see Jesus as the Good Shepherd?
How are the followers of Jesus called to shepherd
others who may be lost or afraid, weak or without guidance?

- Sunday Scripture Readings
- Reflection on the Scriptures has become
more and more a part of basic Christian spirituality. At times
we would like to return to the Sunday Scriptures at home, but
we do not have the missalette with us. At other times we may
be interested in seeing just what came before or immediately
after the reading for the day to gain more insights.
To encourage this encounter with
the Scriptures, we will be including in the bulletin the scripture
reading references for the current Sunday and the following Sunday.
In addition, in our on-line bulletin we will have the actual
links to the readings.

- QUESTIONS OF THE
WEEK
- Fourth Sunday
of Easter
-
- Today the world still values
power and control. The Gospel challenges not only our attitudes
about being believers and followers but about being leaders as
well. With a Christlike outlook we choose to empower rather than
control and to lead by serving.
- Adults: Do my motives and actions reflect
Christs presence within me?
Children: What other Bible stories do I know about
shepherds?

- LITURGY BITS AND BYTES
Easter Candle
During the Easter Season the Paschal
Candle should be placed near the Ambo where the Word of God is
proclaimed. It is lit each time the people of God gather during
the Easter Season. The Easter Candle has always had a connection
with the Easter Vigil. It is during the Vigil that the candle
was solemnly lit from the Easter fire. In former times the Paschal
Candle was extinguished with great solemnity after the Gospel
on the feast of Ascension Thursday. That ritual was a way of
dramatizing the fact that the lighted candle represented the
presence of the Risen Lord now ascended to the Father. Today,
there is no such ceremony. In fact the Paschal Candle is used
throughout the year. It has a special significance at Baptisms
and Funerals because the focus of both these events is on the
new life that we share in the Risen Christ. Many churches burn
it at all the Masses during the month of November as we remember
those who have died. The Paschal Candle should be a reminder
of the promise of Jesus: Where two or three are gathered
in my name, there I am in the midst of them.

PEACE

There will be a Bread for the World Sunday
Offering of Letters on Pentecost-May 30/31. Bread
for the World is a collective Christian voice urging our nations
decision makers to end hunger at home and abroad. We are urging
Congress to reform U.S. foreign assistance so it does a better
job using our nations resources to reduce hunger and poverty
in our world.
Lets pray this week: O God, you desire
that all people should eat and be satisfied. As we follow Jesus
and are transformed by his death and resurrection, may we spend
our lives so that all may share in your bounty. Amen. MASS
