ASCENSION OF THE LORD
May 15/16, 2010

How does your parish promote the unity of all Christians? Your family?

Gospel Reflection: (John 17:20-26) Today we are listening in on Jesus’ prayer to the Father at the Last Supper. His voice communicates deep emotion as he prays for his friends?then and now. What Jesus wants most is unity?unity among all believers, and unity between believers and God. “That they may be one, as we are one,” he prays.
Jesus’ prayer reminds us that if the love of God is truly alive in us, the proof of that love will be in our unity with others. Divisions among Christians are a sign that we still have much work to do.
Discussion Points: How does it feel to know that Jesus was praying for you? How can you show today that you have the spirit of unity? We know that today there are differing beliefs among the various religions of the world, and differing beliefs even among Christians. How can we make a contribution to unity? Think of ways the following might help: love, respect, dialogue, study, prayer.

Sunday Scripture Readings
Reflection on the Scriptures has become more and more a part of basic Christian spirituality. At times we would like to return to the Sunday Scriptures at home, but we do not have the missalette with us. At other times we may be interested in seeing just what came before or immediately after the reading for the day to gain more insights.
To encourage this encounter with the Scriptures, we will be including in the bulletin the scripture reading references for the current Sunday and the following Sunday. In addition, in our on-line bulletin we will have the actual links to the readings.

QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK
Seventh Sunday of Easter

Our beliefs shape who we are and how we live. They guide our thoughts and actions, and help us be the type of person we long to be. Beliefs are important.
Adults: What are the most influential Christian beliefs in my life? In what ways do these beliefs shape who I am and what I do?

Children: What do I believe about God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit? What can I do this week to put this belief into action?

Habitat for Humanity-- “Paying it Forward”
Did you know: The monies donated to build
Habitat Houses are returned to Habitat?
The Habitat home owners pay a monthly mortgage to Habitat to repay Habitat for the monies donated. These mortgage payments in turn are used to provide funds for new Habitat builds.
The Faith Build Coalition has completed 5 homes; each month the mortgage repayments amount to nearly $800. Thus our past donations are currently generating nearly $9,600 annually in new funds for the building of new homes.

Diocesan Parish Share Campaign - Please remember to return your DPSC envelopes with your pledge. We’ll begin reporting results next weekend.
BABY BOTTLE CAMPAIGN UPDATE - 23 bottles returned and counting. There is still 1 unreturned bottle; PLEASE bring it, filled or not, to the office ASAP. The Pregnancy Resource Center reuses these bottles every year.
CATHOLIC COMMUNICATION CAMPAIGN - Help us connect the world with God’s Word! This weekend is the collection for the Catholic Communications Campaign. The Collection funds media projects that spread the Good News through the Internet, radio, TV and print media. These projects evangelize, nourish the faithful, foster community and grant easy, direct access to thousands of Catholic resources. Please contribute generously in the Collection, and visit www.usccb.org/nationalcollections for more information. Remember, half of the collected funds stay right here to support diocesan media projects. Envelopes are located at both bulletin boards in church.

LITURGY BITS AND BYTES
  Ascension

The Thursday of the Sixth Week of Easter has traditionally been celebrated as the Feast of the Ascension. Presently many dioceses have transferred this feast to the Seventh Sunday of Easter so that it can more easily be celebrated by all. When celebrated on that Thursday, it marks the beginning of a novena that concludes with the feast of Pentecost. During this time we emphasize preparation for the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. The hymn “Veni, Creator Spiritus” can be used each day. In former times some parishes extinguished the Paschal Candle with great solemnity to symbolize the departure of the Lord to the right hand of the Father. Now, it remains near the altar and ambo until the conclusion of the feast of Pentecost, when it returns to its place near the Baptistry.
