SIXTH SUNDAY
OF EASTER
May 16/17, 2009

For what would you lay down your life?

Gospel Reflection (John 15:9-17): Anyone who happened to be in a selfish mood when they heard this gospel could not get away from it. Love is everywhere in Jesus’ conversation with his friends at the Last Supper. He gives them and us his memorable commandment: “Love one another as I love you.” It sounds simple. But he reminds us that loving as he do   During Lent we saw this love of Jesus in action. Now during the Easter season we rejoice that such love is victorious over sin and death.

Discussion Points for Gospel:
How many times does Jesus use some form of the word “love” in this gospel reading? Why do you think he repeats it so often? In what ways does Jesus describe how he loves us? What is your favorite statement in this reading? Why? If you had been present at the Last Supper, how do you think Jesus’ words would have affected you?
In what small, ordinary ways do you see members of your family, class, or parish “laying down their lives” for others? Consider how they place the needs and desires of others before what they want. Recall how they sacrifice their own time, talents, and material goods to help others.

Sunday Scripture Readings
Reflection on the Scriptures has become more and more a part of basic Christian spirituality. At times we would like to return to the Sunday Scriptures at home, but we do not have the missalette with us. At other times we may be interested in seeing just what came before or immediately after the reading for the day to gain more insights.
To encourage this encounter with the Scriptures, we will be including in the bulletin the scripture reading references for the current Sunday and the following Sunday. In addition, in our on-line bulletin we will have the actual links to the readings.

QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK
Sixth Sunday of Easter

Our faith declares that God is love, and we see in Jesus the human (incarnate) face of divine love. The love revealed in Jesus is the measure of all human love.
Adults: How deeply do I understand (and live) the connection between self-sacrifice and love in its most pure form?

Children: What is one specific thing I can do this week to follow Jesus’ command that we should love one another.

GOOD NEWS -- HABITAT FOR HUMANITY
Last week we added $230.00 to our Habitat House! The total is now $2,54300. In addition, to reaching our goal of $3,000.00, there is another goal, perhaps even more important: Community Participation! Please make some contribution large or small; this will make it a truly parish project; together we can do great things. Since 1990, the Athens County Chapter of Habitat for Humanity has completed 23 homes. The Faith Build Coalition has completed 5 of the 23 homes.

If you haven’t signed up to support St.Paul/CTK Religious Education through the Kroger Community Reward Program – please do! Last year participation in the Kroger Gift Card Program earned $10,000 for the Religious Education Program. Signing up is easy – and can be done on-line. All you need is an email address and your Kroger Plus Card. Then go to www.krogercommunityrewards.com The NPO code for CTK/St. Paul Religious Education is 80963.
Remember, this program does NOT cost money for individuals to participate, but instead takes eligible purchases of items you are already buying for your household, and donates a portion of your expenditures back to community organizations. Participation does not affect your Kroger Fuel Points. Computers will be available after Mass in the parish center to help facilitate signing up.

LITURGY BITS AND BYTES
 Mystagogy

Mystagogy is reflecting. It is a time set aside for those who just celebrated the Sacraments of Initiation at the Easter Vigil to share the meaning of the rites and rituals they just celebrated. Perhaps sharing how our experience affected us is something that we do not do often enough. We need to take some time to reflect, perhaps with others, on the meaning of the Holy Week celebrations. We are so used to looking forward to upcoming events that we forget how important it is to look back and share how and where God touched our hearts. That is the whole meaning of Mystagogy. To ask the question after every Mass, “Where did God touch me during the Liturgy?” would be a wonderful way to make more real the power of God’s presence.

CATHOLIC COMMUNICATION CAMPAIGN (CCC)

Help us connect the world with God’s Word! If Jesus Christ were on earth today, how would he spread his message? The CCC believes Jesus would use every means available, so it makes use of media outlets to evangelize and promote gospel values. You can truly make a different right here in our diocese through your donation to today’s Collection. Half of all funds collected in our diocese are used for local communications projects such as our diocesan newspaper and televised Mass for homebound persons.
To learn more about CCC’s national communications projects, visit www.CatholicCommunicationCampaign.org
Use the envelopes located at the bulletin boards in church or the one in your church support packet.
FROM THE PEACE & JUSTICE COMMITTEE - Bread for the World’s Offering of Letters is May 30-31. Will you take two minutes to write a short letter that can change thousands of lives around the world?
“As people of God, we are encouraged to show love and concern for the widow and the orphan. We are also encouraged to be good stewards of the resources God has graciously given us. Bread for the World’s 2009 Offering of Letters affords us the opportunity to do both by using our foreign aid resources wisely and efficiently, thus helping more people to lift themselves out of hunger and poverty.” -Rev. Eervin Sims Jr.
