PENTECOST SUNDAY
May 22/23, 2010

When have you experienced the Holy Spirit’s help in keeping Jesus’ word?

Gospel Reflection: (John 20:19-23) Once again we are reliving Easter night with Jesus and the disciples. He breathes on them, communicating the gift of the Holy Spirit. They gladly receive Jesus’ Spirit and his ministry of forgiving sins. At Pentecost the Spirit will send them forth as living signs that Jesus has overcome sin and death.
Discussion Points: Forgiveness is not “forgiving and forgetting.” It does not deny that a wrong or a hurt took place. When we hurt someone, the bridge between us falls down. Our bond with that person is broken. When we forgive someone, or are forgiven, we allow the Holy Spirit to rebuild the bridge between us, even stronger than before. Because we are limited and human, we may not feel this all at once. But forgiveness is part of God’s love. When we forgive, we bring God’s love into our lives and into the lives of those who have hurt us. We can cross the bridge to meet again. We may still remember being hurt, but we can recall it with thanksgiving. We can thank God for the new and stronger bridge. Are there any broken bridges in your life? What might be a first step to the Spirit’s gift of rebuilding and repair? How could you ask the Holy Spirit for help?

Sunday Scripture Readings
Reflection on the Scriptures has become more and more a part of basic Christian spirituality. At times we would like to return to the Sunday Scriptures at home, but we do not have the missalette with us. At other times we may be interested in seeing just what came before or immediately after the reading for the day to gain more insights.
To encourage this encounter with the Scriptures, we will be including in the bulletin the scripture reading references for the current Sunday and the following Sunday. In addition, in our on-line bulletin we will have the actual links to the readings.

QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK
Pentecost Sunday

The Spirit who Christ gives us is a Spirit of reconciliation. After breathing on the disciples, Jesus tells them that whatever sins they forgive will be forgiven. If we are to follow the Risen Lord, we must be agents of forgiveness to others.
Adults: Am I aware of someone I need to forgive? Am I willing to take one step to make reconciliation more possible?

Children: Am I sometimes mean to others? Am I willing to treat them better because Jesus asks me to do so?

Habitat for Humanity-- “No Flipping”

The Habitat homeowners make an interest free monthly mortgage payment equivalent to the cost of the materials used in the build.
But there is also a substantial amount of value-added in the donated labor for the build. So while the material may cost $80,000; the home may have a market value of $120,000.
To guard against “flipping”, the home owners assume a second mortgage that is paid back over a period of 20 year. If the homeowners sell prior to this time, the balance of the second mortgage is paid to Habitat from the sale price.
This is a wise policy that respects the sacrifices made in the name of Habitat.
Please make a contribution to this year’s Faith Build project.

Diocesan Parish Share Campaign
Pledges to date: 36 Amount $18,165.00

Our DPSC Goal is $25,700.00. Monies collected above this amount will be returned to the parish. Remember, this year we have major capitol improvements to make: the replacement of the roof in the church and also the replacement of the heating and air conditioning systems. Your support then is especially important.
PENTECOST (Whitsunday) - A feast of the universal Church which commemorates the Descent of the Holy Ghost upon the Apostles, fifty days after the Resurrection of Christ, on the ancient Jewish festival called the “feast of weeks” or Pentecost (Exodus 34:22; Deuteronomy 16:10). Whitsunday is so called from the white garments which were worn by those who were baptized during the vigil; Pentecost is the Greek for “the fiftieth” (day after Easter). Whitsunday, as a Christian feast, dates back to the first century, although there is no evidence that it was observed, as there is in the case of Easter; the passage in I Corinthians (16:8) probably refers to the Jewish feast.
BABY BOTTLE CAMPAIGN UPDATE - The PRC would like to thank the congregation for their generosity! As a church you have helped raise over $300 of the more than $8,700 given toward the Baby Bottle Campaign. The 2010 Campaign goal is $12,000. Many precious lives will be saved because of your generosity! As a church you requested 24 bottles; all 24 were filled and returned! Thank you for your involvement and support!
CATHOLIC COMMUNICATION CAMPAIGN - Thank you for your generous contributions! Your generosity will support important Catholic media projects in our diocese and all over the world. LITURGY BITS AND BYTES
  Pentecost

The great feast of Pentecost commemorates the coming of the Holy Spirit. It is, in reality, the completion of our Easter celebration. On the first Pentecost the apostles received the gifts of the Spirit to proclaim the good news to the whole world. Despite differences in language and culture, we are one Lord, one Faith, and one Baptism. The church interior will be decorated in Pentecost red. Members of the congregation can celebrate by wearing red as well.
