ASCENSION
OF THE LORD
May 23/24, 2009

How do you determine what is true?

Gospel Reflection (John 17:11b-19): Have you ever been present when a grandparent or other relative knew that he or she was in the process of dying? At such times, people often pray for those they are leaving behind and express their love for them. That’s what Jesus did at the Last Supper. He knew that his friends would be full of fear and grief at his death. He also knew that they would be threatened by many evil forces in the world.    Jesus prayed to the Father to guard his friends and keep them in his name. He prayed that the Christian community would be one, just as he and the Father are one.

Discussion Points for Gospel:
Jesus says that his friends “do not belong to the world.” What do you think he means by that? What are some of the forms of evil in the world that threaten Jesus’ followers today? How are we called to respond to evil?
Jesus’ prayer for the unity of all Christians has yet to be fully answered. In what ways does your family or your parish reach out to Christians of other churches? What ideas do you have about how your parish might form stronger bonds with other local churches?

Sunday Scripture Readings
Reflection on the Scriptures has become more and more a part of basic Christian spirituality. At times we would like to return to the Sunday Scriptures at home, but we do not have the missalette with us. At other times we may be interested in seeing just what came before or immediately after the reading for the day to gain more insights.
To encourage this encounter with the Scriptures, we will be including in the bulletin the scripture reading references for the current Sunday and the following Sunday. In addition, in our on-line bulletin we will have the actual links to the readings.

QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK
Feast of the Ascension

In John’s Gospel there is no account of the institution of the Eucharist. Rather John uses the prayer of consecration found in this Gospel passage to express the theology and meaning of Eucharist.
Adults: What words from this prayer bring me to a fuller understanding of the Eucharist?

Children: How can I be of service to others, following the example of Jesus?

DPSC envelopes in the pews today.
Part of the DPSC campaign is to have a Sunday in which parishioners who have not yet made a pledge would have the chance to do so by means of an envelope placed in the pews. We are doing this this Sunday. Brochures are also in the pews that describe the essential work of the Diocese. If you have not yet pledged, perhaps you can take advantage of this opportunity.
Thank you for your financial support and also for your efforts to make our parish community a place where the presence of Christ is easy to recognize.
HABITAT FOR HUMANITY
We’re still shy of our goal of $3,000.00, but there is another week in which you can still contribute to this organization. Our continued support as a parish has enabled the Faith Build Coalition to complete 6 of the 23 homes built by the Athens County Chapter of Habitat since 1990!
ASCENSION is a day that unfolds the promise that Jesus will return. ...[On this day] we do not observe a departure. We celebrate a presence. Thus this day in the 50-day sweep of easter is a peculiarly opportune time for relishing our hope and our status... We should approach this day with open hearts. We do not gather at the eucharist to have the Ascension explained or to memorize exegetical points. We come to be inspired, to offer praise, to proclaim the Risen One who never leaves us.

LITURGY BITS AND BYTES
Sunday Obligation
Sunday has always been a special day for Christians. Each Sunday has always been seen as a “mini-Easter.” On the first day of the week we are called to prayer and to rest—to keep the day holy by our worship together and to take time from our regular activity to be re-created. Both our prayer and our rest can remind us to put things in proper perspective: God is our Creator, the source of the world we live in. How easily we become enmeshed in the created and forget the Creator!    The Easter season is a splendid time to relax, to be refreshed, to rejoice, to rest. Remember the phrase, “servile work?” Well, we are not supposed to do any of that on Sunday. Why? So that we can rest. God is saying to us: “You deserve a break today. Relax!”
