THE MOST HOLY BODY & BLOOD
OF CHRIST
June 5/6, 2010

How does the Eucharist nourish you? What “loaves and fishes” do you have that nourish others?

Gospel Reflection: (Luke 9:11b-17) Have you noticed how all the readings today speak of feeding people? Our gospel story shows us Jesus and the Twelve surrounded by a huge, hungry crowd. When the Twelve protest that they cannot feed everyone, Jesus has them divide the crowd into smaller groups. Then he takes what they have—five loaves, two fishes—gives thanks (blesses the food), breaks it, and invites the disciples to pass it around and share it. There is more than enough for everyone! We can, of course, see this story as a sign of the Eucharist, in which Jesus continues to feed the multitude of his followers. But we can also see it as a challenge to do what we can to feed the millions of hungry people in our world today.

Discussion Points: What four actions of Jesus make this event similar to the event of the Last Supper? This story shows Jesus taking ordinary food and asking that his disciples share it. How can we share ordinary food with the hungry today?

Sunday Scripture Readings
Reflection on the Scriptures has become more and more a part of basic Christian spirituality. At times we would like to return to the Sunday Scriptures at home, but we do not have the missalette with us. At other times we may be interested in seeing just what came before or immediately after the reading for the day to gain more insights.
To encourage this encounter with the Scriptures, we will be including in the bulletin the scripture reading references for the current Sunday and the following Sunday. In addition, in our on-line bulletin we will have the actual links to the readings.

QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK
The Most Holy Body & Blood of Christ

When the Lord gave us the Eucharist, he meant this great sacrament to sustain us. It is the ‘bread of angels’ and ‘food for the journey.’ It enables us to go to God.
Adults: Are there particular moments when the Eucharist clearly became the decisive and life-giving sustenance of my life, enabling me to go forward?

Children: How do I show gratitude and thanks in my life?

Habitat for Humanity -- Donation tithe builds Habitat Homes in other countries

A new Habitat build costs about $80,000 in materials; $8,000 is sent to the International Office to help build a home in less developed countries.
Over the years the Faith Build Coalition has built 6 homes in our area; they have also financed another 6 homes in other countries. Many of these homes have been built in Guatemala.
We are rapidly reaching our goal for this year; there have been 45 contributions, many of which have been quite substantial. Thanks to all who have helped.
The second goal is that this gift be representative of our faith community. We still have some work to do to broaden the support for Habitat. Please give something, even a little will mean much.

Any male youth entering grades 7-9 this fall and who are interested in exploring the possibility of a priestly vocation are welcome to attend our first vocation camp of the summer at Sacred Heart Retreat House June 27-30. The camp will begin at 5:00 PM on the 27th and conclude at 11:00 AM on the 30th; the cost is just $65 per participant.
Also, any male youth entering grades 10-12 this fall and who are interested in exploring the possibility of a priestly vocation are welcome to attend the second vocation camp of the summer at Sacred Heart Retreat House July 25-28. The camp will begin at 5:00 PM on the 25th and conclude at 11:00 AM on the 28th. The cost is $65 per participant.
The camps will be filled with fun, games, sports, movies, talks, discussion, prayer, swimming, hiking, cookouts, a bonfire, snacks and very importantly, learning more about our faith and what God may be inviting one to do with his life. The main goal is to introduce a person more fully to the vocation of priesthood. Anyone is welcome who is looking for a fun and faith-filled time and also, who is open to learning about these awesome vocations.
You can express your interest and save a spot in the camp by calling the Office of Vocations at 740-282-0646 or email at diosteubhof@sbcglobal.net. Also, if you have any questions or want more specific information, please do not hesitate to call. Once we have received a person’s reservation, we will send the information packet needed for the camp.
LITURGY BITS AND BYTES
  Corpus Christi

This feast, now called the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ, developed during the Middle Ages (in the year 1264) at the request of St. Thomas Aquinas who wrote the hymns and prayers for the feast. Its purpose was to emphasize the presence of Jesus in the Eucharist. A procession with the Blessed Sacrament in a monstrance was a public display of faith. Processions, incense, flowers, canopy, monstrance! For 800 years people looked at and adored our Lord in the Eucharist, singing about the awesome presence of Christ among us, remembering Holy Thursday, spiritually communing but rarely daring to receive the Body and Blood of the Lord in Holy Communion. Today we understand once more that the Eucharist is for eating and drinking. The feast of the Body and Blood of Christ calls us to ponder the love of our savior who came to be with us and to serve us in a most ordinary way, and to ask how we might follow more closely in his footsteps.
