THE MOST HOLY BODY &
BLOOD OF CHRIST
June 13/14, 2009

How do you show gratitude for the Eucharist?

Gospel Reflection (Mark 14:12-16, 22-26): When people arrive at their parish church to celebrate Mass on Sunday morning, they are often distracted by many things. But this gospel reading reminds us of what Eucharist is all about. It helps us to focus on the Last Supper, the final Passover meal Jesus shared with his friends. There we hear him say those familiar and astounding words: “This is my body. This is my blood.”
The breaking of the bread and pouring out of the wine remind us once again of how Jesus’ body was broken on the cross and how his blood was spilled for us. Now we are his body on earth. And we are nourished by his eucharistic presence among us.

Sunday Scripture Readings
Reflection on the Scriptures has become more and more a part of basic Christian spirituality. At times we would like to return to the Sunday Scriptures at home, but we do not have the missalette with us. At other times we may be interested in seeing just what came before or immediately after the reading for the day to gain more insights.
To encourage this encounter with the Scriptures, we will be including in the bulletin the scripture reading references for the current Sunday and the following Sunday. In addition, in our on-line bulletin we will have the actual links to the readings.

QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK
The Most Holy Body & Blood of Christ

Breaking bread together is more than a repetitious ritual or a boring memory of past events. Through the Eucharist we are nourished to live as the Body of Christ in the world and sent to bring others into communion with Christ.
Adults: How can I be bread (nourishment) this week for someone who needs help?

Children: How can I invite others to learn about Jesus?

THE BODY AND BLOOD OF CHRIST (Corpus Christi)
The Solemnity of Corpus Christi commemorates the institution of the Holy Eucharist, paralleling Holy Thursday commemorating Our Lord’s institution of the Eucharist. Corpus Christi was introduced in the late 13th century to encourage the faithful give special honor to the institution of the Holy Eucharist to the Blessed Sacrament. The official title of this Solemnity was changed in 1970 to The Body and Blood of Christ; and it is still on the Roman Missal’s official Calendar for the universal Church on Thursday after Trinity Sunday; however, where it is not a day of obligation, it is usually celebrated on the Sunday following Trinity Sunday. --Catholic Encyclopedia, 1913 edition

LITURGY BITS AND BYTES
 Confirmation
Touches of red to symbolize the fire of the Spirit are frequently used for the celebration of Confirmation. The rite of Confirmation asks a response of faith from the candidates as well as from the parish faith family. We promise to help them to grow in the grace of the sacrament. The candidates say “yes” to their faith and to the Holy Spirit. But first they should ask for the support of the parish. How can we support them? Our example at Sunday worship, the witness of our individual Christian lives, and our willingness to be people of service to others, can be easily seen. Come, Holy Spirit, fill their lives with the power of your love and renew this community in its call to worship, witness, and service.
