THE TWELFTH SUNDAY IN
ORDINARY TIME

FATHERS DAY
June 19/20, 2010

What do you do to promote the unity of the Church and to mend divisions?

Gospel Reflection: (Luke 19:18-24) Today’s Gospel from Luke is perhaps one of the most poignant accounts of Jesus. Before this exchange with his disciples, Jesus has already cured the possessed man, cured Simon Peter’s mother-in-law, cured the leper, taught the multitude about God’s love, healed the paralytic, healed the centurion’s slave, raised the widow’s son from death, pardoned the sinful woman, calmed the storm at sea, healed the Gerasene demoniac and Jairus’ daughter and the woman with the hemorrhage. He had fed the 5,000 men plus women and children with 5 loaves and 2 fish.
Now, he is in praying in solitude and the disciples are with him. He asks, “Who do the crowds say that I am?” What did Jesus feel as he asked? What answer did he expect, or hope for? And what did he think when the disciples answered: John the Baptist, Elijah, or one of the ancient prophets arisen? Then, the Gospel says, he said, “But who do you say that I am?” Did Jesus hope—after all the miracles and teachings—they would finally understand? Today, we might reflect on that same question that Jesus asks, “Who do you say that I am?” We have the witness of Peter who was the first to reply to Jesus, saying Jesus is “The Christ of God.” But when he turns to you and me, how shall we respond?

Discussion Points: Discipleship means continually answering the question that Jesus asks, “Who do you say that I am?” We can answer in many ways: in prayer, in our words, in our decisions, in our participation in the community of faith, in our efforts to share his Good News with others. Who do you think answers Jesus’ question effectively today? Name one way in which your life answers who you believe Jesus to be.

Sunday Scripture Readings
Reflection on the Scriptures has become more and more a part of basic Christian spirituality. At times we would like to return to the Sunday Scriptures at home, but we do not have the missalette with us. At other times we may be interested in seeing just what came before or immediately after the reading for the day to gain more insights.
To encourage this encounter with the Scriptures, we will be including in the bulletin the scripture reading references for the current Sunday and the following Sunday. In addition, in our on-line bulletin we will have the actual links to the readings.

QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK
TWELFTH SUNDAY IN
ORDINARY TIME

Being “clothed in Christ” means that when others see me they should see Christ. How I act, what I say, and who I am should be a living witness for Jesus.

Adults: What will people learn about Jesus if they see me at work or driving or interacting with my spouse and children?

Children: What will people learn about Jesus if they see me at work or driving or interacting with my spouse and children?

Dear God,
Thank You for the gift of our Fathers!
Our dads help us feel secure and protected as they guide us through life. Through laughter and tears, they understand and provide encouragement. Fathers young and old, we remember you all.
Dear Lord, please bless our fathers with a renewed awareness that they belong to You; protect them, love them, and lead them, that they might find rest in Your embrace. May we enjoy our times together, neither regretting yesterday nor fearing tomorrow.
Help our fathers succeed as the men you call them to be, and may they know the deep love of their family and friends. Encourage them and anoint them for their mission of loving and leading their families to You, the Father of us all, now and forever. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

DIOCESAN PARISH SHARE CAMPAIGN
The returns of the pledge cards for the DPSC are beginning to show some promise. We now have $2,220.00 to apply to our capital improvement projects. Please continue to return your pledge cards. All of the additional monies collected will be applied to the capital expenditures for the new roof and the heating/air conditioning system.
I am confident that as you see more details for this project you will find it worthy of your generous support.
Progress report
We have written to the diocese for permission to hire the architect to draw up plans for the roof for the church.
We have also been in touch with a company in St. Clairsville which installs geothermal heating and air-conditioning systems. Utility costs could be reduced by as much as 76%! Quite encouraging numbers.

PETER’S PENCE COLLECTION
Next week our diocese will take up the Peter’s Pence Collection, which provides the Holy Father with the assistance he needs to carry out his most important charitable works. The proceeds benefit the most disadvantaged: victims of war, oppression, and disasters. Through your generosity, with Pope Benedict we can cast the love of Christ upon the world. Envelopes are located at both bulletin boards in church. For more info, visit www.uscc.org/nationalcollections

Call the Office of Vocations at 740-282-0646 or email at diosteubhof@sbcglobal.net.
PEACE AND JUSTICE COMMITTEE - The tragedy in the Gulf of Mexico is a powerful reminder of where the oil we use and often waste comes from. Regarding the crisis, the US Conference of Catholic Bishops has quoted the Franciscan Action Network, “As we look at the images of the devastation from the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, could Christ be calling each one of us by name [as] he called [St.] Francis, and urging us to rebuild God’s house that is being destroyed? ... Responding with integrity to the oil spill in the gulf requires that we squarely face and begin to transform our habits of high consumption that we have grown accustomed to and take for granted.”
LITURGY BITS AND BYTES
  Attention at Liturgy

We support one another’s faith by the kind of response we give to the Lord in our worship. That response needs to be active, alive, and enthusiastic. We make a difference to one another by the way we are attentive to what is happening at Mass. We can build one another up by the reverence we show. Eucharistic ministers certainly notice the reverence of people as they come to receive the Lord in communion. We can also weaken one another just by our inattention, our look of boredom, our non-participation. We have an affect on one another even when we don’t always know it. Our responses and actions during liturgy are part of our ministry to one another as members of the Body of Christ.
