TWELFTH SUNDAY
IN ORDINARY TIME

June 20/21, 2009

Does anything shake your faith? Does your faith help you address your fears?

Gospel Reflection (Mark 4:35-41): Put yourself in this scene. You are in a small sailboat with the apostles. A great storm comes up and the waves crash against the boat. Jesus, who must be very tired, stays asleep. The apostles, afraid of drowning, wake Jesus up. “Be still,” he tells the storm at sea, and at once there is a great calm. His disciples’ mood switches from terror to awe at this sign, which recalls so vividly the words of God in the first reading.

Discussion Points for Gospel:
Let us imagine that Jesus asks us, as he asked the disciples, “Why are you lacking in faith?” How will we answer? What is Jesus trying to show us in this event?
No matter what happens in life, we can turn to Jesus who helps us and brings us peace. How will you bring his peace to others?

Sunday Scripture Readings
Reflection on the Scriptures has become more and more a part of basic Christian spirituality. At times we would like to return to the Sunday Scriptures at home, but we do not have the missalette with us. At other times we may be interested in seeing just what came before or immediately after the reading for the day to gain more insights.
To encourage this encounter with the Scriptures, we will be including in the bulletin the scripture reading references for the current Sunday and the following Sunday. In addition, in our on-line bulletin we will have the actual links to the readings.

QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK
Twelfth Sunday in Ordinary Time

The saving power of God is always close at hand to us, even when we are unaware of it. Sometimes it takes a critical moment in our lives to make us realize both that God is indeed with us and that he has the power to save us.
Adults: When has the Lord helped me break through fear and experience a new confidence in him?

Children: How does Jesus let me know that he is near me to help me and to guide me?

ORDINARY TIME resumes on the Monday following Pentecost and continues through Saturday afternoon before the first Sunday of Advent, some five or six months later. In the Roman Catholic Church, the actual number of weeks of Ordinary Time in any given year can total 33 or 34. Green is the liturgical color of Ordinary Time. The term Ordinary Time was first used with the liturgical reforms which followed the Second Vatican Council. --from Wikipedia Encyclopedia

Dear God, thank You for the gift of our Fathers!
Thank You for their encouragement, their guidance, and their provision for us. Thank You for their patience, understanding, and sense of humor—in short, for their unfailing love!
Please bless our Fathers with Your Spirit of wisdom, counsel, and fortitude. May they feel Your love in their hearts, Your peace in their minds, and Your joy in their spirits this special day.
We ask all this in the name of Your Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ, through the intercession of good Saint Joseph, whom You chose to be His father on earth. Amen.

A father’s blessing gives a family firm roots.

LITURGY BITS AND BYTES
 Father’s Day
Although not a liturgical feast, we remember the fathers of our community on the third Sunday in June. Father’s Day is a day set aside in their honor. The opening prayer for the liturgy addresses God as a “father, guide and protector of people.” In the alternate prayer we pray to God “whose fatherly love keeps us safe.” The “Book of Blessings” has a special blessing for the fathers of the community at the end of Mass. We thank them for the ways that they have been examples of God’s ever-present love. We also pray for one another that we can be better children of God by the ways we live out what we proclaim.

“The universal Christian symbol is the cross, a transcendent fixture that stands with both a vertical and a horizontal element. Bread for the World’s 2009 Offering of Letters reconciles both elements where our commitment to God, the vertical, shines with our care for the poor and the hungry, the horizontal. Via these letters, our national elected officials will understand the moral imperative to alleviate poverty and hunger. They will join with the faith community in fortifying the greatest of all wars in our generation, the war against apathy, injustice and poverty. Let us pray that the 2009 Offering of Letters will fortify a cross with the complete message of our Lord, bringing Good News to the poor.”
