THE THIRTEENTH SUNDAY
IN ORDINARY TIME
June 26/27, 2010

When did you first decide to follow Jesus?

Gospel Reflection: (Luke 9:51-62) Jesus is on his way to Jerusalem. He is preparing himself to face suffering and death. He forgives the Samaritans who refuse to welcome him, showing his disciples how to behave toward their enemies. He then responds to three different people who want to follow him. Does he say, “Come with me and all will be well?” Not at all. Jesus tells them right up front that the cost of becoming his disciple is high. That cost may include giving up home, family, and means of income.

Discussion Points: Plowing gets a field ready for planting. In Jesus’ time, a farmer plowed a field by following an ox on foot. The farmer used the reins in his hands to give signals to the ox. If the farmer looked back, he would of course move his body around. Then the reins would jiggle. The ox would think it was a “turn signal” from the reins. The ox would veer from the straight path and the farmer’s smooth straight row would be ruined. Jesus asks us to keep looking straight ahead as we follow him. No looking back to check on how we’re doing! This takes trust. How do you show you trust Jesus to lead you “straight ahead?” When are you tempted to “look back” (perhaps at your sins and failings) or to look around in a different direction? Who or what helps you to keep trusting Jesus? How can you show that you are “fit” for the reign of God?

Sunday Scripture Readings
Reflection on the Scriptures has become more and more a part of basic Christian spirituality. At times we would like to return to the Sunday Scriptures at home, but we do not have the missalette with us. At other times we may be interested in seeing just what came before or immediately after the reading for the day to gain more insights.
To encourage this encounter with the Scriptures, we will be including in the bulletin the scripture reading references for the current Sunday and the following Sunday. In addition, in our on-line bulletin we will have the actual links to the readings.

QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK
THIRTEENTH SUNDAY IN
ORDINARY TIME

The man who wishes to follow Jesus first asks to bury his father. Jesus refuses to allow it. Even as we struggle with Jesus’ harsh response, we should focus on the reason for it: the call to proclaim the kingdom must be placed before all else.
Adults: What do I know I must do but have been postponing? When will I begin to do it?

Children: What good thing is God calling me to do for someone today?

DIOCESAN PARISH SHARE CAMPAIGN
The returns of the pledge cards for the DPSC are beginning to show some promise. We now have $3,070.00 to apply to our capital improvement projects. Please continue to return your pledge cards. All of the additional monies collected will be applied to the capital expenditures for the new roof and the heating/air conditioning system.
I am confident that as you see more details for this project you will find it worthy of your generous support.
Progress report
This week we have received permission from the Vicar General to contract with RVC Architects, Inc to draw plans for the replacement of the roof.
We have also been in touch with a company in St. Clairsville which installs geothermal heating and air-conditioning systems. Utility costs could be reduced by as much as 76%! Quite encouraging numbers.

PETER’S PENCE COLLECTION
This weekend we support the Holy Father in his charitable works. The Peter’s Pence Collection is taken up worldwide in an effort of solidarity to support the most disadvantaged: victims of war, oppression, and natural disaster and others in need of emergency assistance. Pope Benedict XVI has said, “God’s love . . . gives us the courage to continue seeking and working for the benefit of all” (Caritas in Veritate, no. 78). Cast the love of Christ upon the world -- please be generous in today’s Collection. Envelopes are located at both bulletin boards in church. For more info, visit www.uscc.org/nationalcollections

“LISTEN . . . IS GOD CALLING YOU?”
You’ll never regret saying “yes” to His call to serve as a catechist (teacher or aid). If God is nudging you to lead a group of learners contact Nancy Denhart for more information, ndenhart@ctkathens.org or 740-590-3302. Catechists are needed at all levels pre-K through adult. Come share your talent and assist in bringing Christ to others.

THANK YOU to all who have enrolled in the Kroger Cares program. The proceeds for the program help with Religious Education at all levels in the parishes by offsetting the parish assessments for the children’s program. We encourage every parishioner to sign up. Just follow the simple directions at www.krogercommunityrewards.com. Enter OHIO and our name: C.T.K. /ST. PAUL’S RELIGIOUS EDUCATION or our number 80963. If you do not have a computer or e-mail services contact Nancy Denhart.

ST. FRANCIS SOCIETY will gather for Mass at 10:00 AM at CTK in the Parish Center Chapel on Friday, July 2. Following Mass the group will carpool to Lancaster for lunch at Shaw’s Restaurant. Sign up on the sheet posted on the PC bulletin board.
YOUTH SERVICE PROJECT - On July 7 many of our youth will be traveling to St. Michael parish in Paintsville, Ky. to work with a missionary priest for 5 days to serve to poor in the mountains. We would like to take donations of NEW socks, underwear, and school supplies for their mission school (K-8th). If you would like to help, please drop off your donations at church or contact our youth minister Kate Kahler at 592-2711. THANK YOU!

LITURGY BITS AND BYTES
  Celebrate the Whole Mass

Catholics come from a legalistic attitude toward Mass. A question of the past, “How late can I come to Mass and still have it count?” reflects that older attitude. People arrive during the Introductory Rites and even throughout the readings. Since Vatican II we have been more aware of Mass as a communal celebration, as a family meal.
When we gather for Sunday Mass it is important that we reflect on what we believe about our presence. We believe that each person in the assembly is important. Each has a role to play. Each has a contribution to make for the good of the whole assembly. The Introductory Rites of our liturgy are designed to help us “come together” as a family. It takes some significant effort to do that. We should make a special effort to be in church at least in time to say “hello” to one other person before the gathering song. This will help us be better prepared to hear God speak to us. It is also a matter of good manners. If we arrive late, we distract those who are already in the pews.
Concert halls will not allow people to enter after the performance has started so as not to distract or disturb those already enjoying the show. It has to be as important to avoid disturbing those in prayer as those watching a performance. At those events we also stay until the end. It would be rude and disruptive to leave early. Our communion procedure, our announcements, our blessing and dismissal are all part our eucharistic celebration and prayer.
