THIRTEENTH SUNDAY
IN ORDINARY TIME

June 27/28, 2009

What story about Jesus astounds you?

Gospel Reflection (Mark 5:21-24, 35-43): Imagine the grief of the father of the little girl who is dying. The story is told almost like a play. First, Jairus, the girl’s father, comes to Jesus for help; but before he can reach her, people come to say that she has died. Then Jesus goes to the house of Jairus. Jesus takes the girl’s hand and says, “Little girl, I say to you, arise!” Immediately she stands up and begins to walk around. Imagine the party in Jairus’ home that night! Like the crowd in this scene, we may be inclined not to accept the word of Jesus at times. We may think we know better. But Jesus will still remind us of the need to trust him and to have no fear.

Discussion Points for Gospel:
Share the imagined feelings of the father, the girl, and the crowd. You may want to volunteer to read aloud and enact the story of Jairus and his daughter.
Have you ever felt “stuck”? Have you ever felt, “I don’t know how I’m going to do this, or get through this”? Think of a situation like that in your life or in the life of someone you know. Pray quietly for a moment. Like Jairus, you might like to pray, “Jesus, please come.” You might like to say this several times. Then imagine Jesus saying your name or the name of the person you are praying for. He says, “__________, I say to you, arise!” Jesus is with you and those you love in every situation. He will give you what you need, whether that is more patience, or kindness, or truth, or even a new way to go about things. When you ask Jesus to come, he comes! And when he comes, he brings new life.

Sunday Scripture Readings
Reflection on the Scriptures has become more and more a part of basic Christian spirituality. At times we would like to return to the Sunday Scriptures at home, but we do not have the missalette with us. At other times we may be interested in seeing just what came before or immediately after the reading for the day to gain more insights.
To encourage this encounter with the Scriptures, we will be including in the bulletin the scripture reading references for the current Sunday and the following Sunday. In addition, in our on-line bulletin we will have the actual links to the readings.

QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK
Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Faith is the key word in today’s Gospel. Jesus commends the woman indicating that it is her faith that has saved and healed her. He comforts Jairus with the command, “Do not fear, only believe” (Mark 5:36). Faith is a gift of the Spirit poured into us at Baptism. With faith we can face seemingly hopeless situations.
Adults: How has my faith is Jesus brought me through difficulties?

Children: When has Jesus helped me face an illness or a painful circumstance?

FOURTH OF JULY - Next Saturday we celebrate our country’s Independence Day. In thanksgiving for the blessings of our country and in petition that we might live up to our responsibilities as citizens, share in the Eucharist at Mass next weekend! Have a safe and happy 4th!
PETER’S PENCE - this weekend! Today we recall the apostolic journey of Pope Benedict XVI to the United States and his call to us to cast the light of Christ upon the world. We can show our solidarity with the Holy Father and our suffering brothers and sisters abroad through our support of this weekend’s Collection. These funds allow him to provide emergency assistance to victims of war, disaster, oppression, and disease. Please be generous in this weekend’s Peter’s Pence Collection. You may use the envelopes at the bulletin boards or those in your collection packet.
THANK YOU - While Father Marty is out of town, he has arranged to have Fathers Paul Hrezo, Bradley Greer, and Pat Gaughan celebrate our Masses this weekend. Father Hrezo will be here Saturday for 5:15 Mass. Father Greer will celebrate the 8:30 Mass, and the 10:30 Mass will be celebrated by Father Paul Gaughan. Please welcome them!
YEAR OF ST. PAUL COMING TO A CLOSE - The Year of St. Paul, designated by Pope Benedict, will come to a close on Monday, June 29, the Feast of Sts. Peter and Paul. Everyone is invited to the closing Mass at St. Paul’s Church at 5:15 PM, followed by a pizza party in the Hall. There will be NO 8:30 AM Mass that day.
NEWLY ORDAINED FR. BRADLEY GREER is celebrating the 8:30 Mass this morning Sunday, June 28. He will celebrate the 11:00 AM at St. Paul’s Parish. Fr. Greer spent two summers with us in Athens as part of his summer pastoral requirements. Stop by after Mass and say hello!

LITURGY BITS AND BYTES
 Vacation
This is vacation time for many people. You can always tell by the number of people who are away during the summer. Vacations are times when we can relax and reflect and enter into a new kind of pace that will help us see our lives in a different way. Jesus says: “Come to me, all you who are weary and find life burdensome, and I will refresh you.” Vacation time, wherever it is taken, can and should be a time to be RE-CREATED. We certainly see it as a time to be renewed physically ... how about spiritually? Perhaps we could make a special effort to welcome those people who are in our midst as vacationers, visitors, or tourists. And, if you’re planning to be away, check with www.masstimes.org to locate the nearest Sunday Mass near your vacation spot. The lazy, hazy days of summer can be a time to experience the touch of the Lord in a unique kind of way.
