FIFTEENTH SUNDAY
IN ORDINARY TIME
July 11/12, 2009

How do your possessions help your discipleship? Hinder it?

Gospel Reflection (Mark 6:7-13): If you and a partner were sent to several different schools to talk about your faith, what worries might you have? When Jesus sent his apostles out two by two, he warned them that some people would not welcome them. He insisted that they take to the road without food or money, trusting in God and the goodness of their hosts. If people would not provide for them or listen to their message, they were to move on to the next place.
But those who accepted the apostles were rewarded. The sick were healed, the possessed were freed of demons, and sinners were reconciled.
Discussion Points for Gospel: Jesus sent his apostles forth as missionaries without backpacks but not without training. They had learned from his word and example what they were to teach. What kinds of training have you been given at home, at school, or in the community? How have you shared the training you received? If you were asked to teach younger children a faith lesson, what kinds of materials might you want to take with you?
If you had been one of the Twelve, what would your response to being sent out almost empty-handed have been? Give one example of how you have already participated in Jesus’ ministry of teaching or healing. What prayer or practice might help you to grow in trusting God to work through you?

Sunday Scripture Readings
Reflection on the Scriptures has become more and more a part of basic Christian spirituality. At times we would like to return to the Sunday Scriptures at home, but we do not have the missalette with us. At other times we may be interested in seeing just what came before or immediately after the reading for the day to gain more insights.
To encourage this encounter with the Scriptures, we will be including in the bulletin the scripture reading references for the current Sunday and the following Sunday. In addition, in our on-line bulletin we will have the actual links to the readings.

QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK
Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Today’s Gospel reminds us that the early Church was a community of missionaries. Its call was to spread the good news of Christ to others. Because of this we can never become content only to keep the Gospel for ourselves. The message of God’s love must be shared.
Adults: How do I see God leading me in my life today? What concrete action can I take to cooperate with God’s guidance?

Children: What good thing can I do today which will keep me on God’s path?

DPSC pledge reminder. The DPSC campaign for 2009 is almost over. We have surpassed the diocesan goal of $24,500; currently pledges total $30,666. The number of pledges is 62. I am hoping that we could be better represented by a broader parish participation.
If you have put aside the pledge card, please consider again a pledge for the campaign. Whatever additional amounts will be collected are returned to CTK by the diocese. Also, for your convenience there are DPSC pledge envelopes at the bulletin boards in the church.
THROUGH THE ROOF! The support for the Habitat for Humanity Faith build Coalition has been very successful this year. The total is $3,843.00. This is a wonderful expression of faith from our community, especially in view of the current stress people are feeling because of the economy. Thank you very much!
CHURCH PICNIC
This annual event is Sunday, July 26, at St. John’s on Dutch Ridge Road in Guysville. Mark your calendars NOW and plan to attend this event that includes family activities, fun and FOOD. Beginning at noon a chicken OR ham dinner will be served. The cost of the meal is $7 per adult and $3 per child. There will be BINGO, raffles and other games. Everyone is WELCOME!

WHY DO CATHOLICS DO THAT?
Why do Catholics give the Sign of Peace during Mass?

The first words Jesus said to his apostles after his Resurrection were, “Peace be with you” (John 20:21). After that their fear disappeared.
By offering each other the Sign of Peace at Mass, we share that peace with the entire Body of Christ.
Jesus also told us to reconcile with one another before approaching the altar of God (Matthew 5:23). Thus, the Sign of Peace is a gesture of Reconciliation with those around us before coming to the altar to receive Holy Communion.

CATHOLIC LADIES OF COLUMBIA will meet this Monday, July 13, at 6:30 pm in the CTK Parish Center. For information, contact Marguerite Kostival at 698-2200, or Trudy Montle at 698-4185.
LITURGY BITS AND BYTES
 Word of God
Christ IS the Word. Christ is present in the Word proclaimed at liturgy. When Catholics used to speak of the “real presence” what was meant was Christ present in the Eucharist. Vatican II expanded the meaning of “real presence” to include, among other things, the real presence of Christ in the proclaimed Word during liturgy. If we believe that, how do we respond? If Christ truly is speaking through the Scriptures as the “Constitution of the Sacred Liturgy” declares, how do we pay attention? Although Missalettes are necessary for those who are hard of hearing, and helpful to those who are not familiar with the structure of the liturgy or the prayers, most of us need to be careful not to let the missalettes interfere with our listening to the proclaimed Word. The Word is meant to be heard in an interactive way. Eye contact with the reader is sometimes as important as hearing each word. There are times when the faith and enthusiasm of the reader is one of the most important parts of the communication. The readers are asked to look out at the assembly when they read. There is nothing more disconcerting than looking out at the community and seeing no one looking back, but only the tops of heads. Assist the reader, lector, deacon, or priest in their ministry of proclaimer. Look attentive. Copyright © 2009 Resource Publications, San Jose, CA
