EIGHTEENTH SUNDAY
IN ORDINARY TIME
August 1/2, 2009

What are the works of God being done in your community?

Gospel Reflection (John 6:24-35): In today’s Gospel, Jesus does what he often did as he taught people. He moves them to ever deeper levels of understanding. They had eaten the loaves that Jesus had miraculously multiplied. Now Jesus invites them to consider the “food which endures to eternal life.” Finally, Jesus tells them, “I am the bread of life.” This bread, then, is the bread they need in order to be able to “work the works of God.” We can move to deeper understanding with Jesus too. Consider the food we eat and how, ultimately, every morsel is a gift from God. As food nourishes our bodies for our life and work, so the Bread of Life strengthens us to do God’s work.

Discussion Points for Gospel: The people in today’s Gospel took boats so that they could seek Jesus. What do you do to seek Jesus in your life?
How does the Bread of Life, Jesus, satisfy your hungers?

Sunday Scripture Readings
Reflection on the Scriptures has become more and more a part of basic Christian spirituality. At times we would like to return to the Sunday Scriptures at home, but we do not have the missalette with us. At other times we may be interested in seeing just what came before or immediately after the reading for the day to gain more insights.
To encourage this encounter with the Scriptures, we will be including in the bulletin the scripture reading references for the current Sunday and the following Sunday. In addition, in our on-line bulletin we will have the actual links to the readings.

QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK
Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Just as God provided the Israelites with manna in the desert, Jesus is the Bread of God who lives in our midst and gives life and sustenance to the world. This Bread of Life is Jesus himself. Intimacy with Jesus and commitment to his teachings is to hunger no more.
Adults: How have the life, teachings, and presence of Jesus sustained and nourished me?

Children: What does the phrase “Jesus is the Bread of Life” mean to me?

OUR GARDENS -- BLESSED ABUNDANCE
We invite you to bring your surplus vegetables to the parish at the Sunday masses; we invite you also to take home with you any of the vegetables that have been brought to share. Whatever remains will be distributed on Monday to the needy of our area. Let this be a wonderful exercise and experience of community.

LITURGY BITS AND BYTES

Musical Flow During Liturgy
Music provides continuity within the liturgy. This means that the songs are chosen to reflect or echo the meaning of the readings. The eucharistic acclamations are normally taken from the same setting by the same composer in order to maintain unity and integrity within the Eucharistic Prayer. The music within each major section of the liturgy should be integral to the action and express the interconnectedness of that section.
In the liturgy music often signals a change in what is happening. For example the entrance rite goes from the prelude right up to the first reading. The music that is used should support the action and help to create the “mood” of the ritual. In some parishes the Lamb of God, the song used during the breaking of bread, sometimes segues into the communion song. This is done on purpose. The breaking of bread, the invitation to receive the Eucharist, and the procession to communion are all part of the one communion rite. Continuing the music through the rite creates a sense of unity. Each major section of the Mass should maintain musical integrity. The Mass is like a symphony with separate movements but connected as one musical piece.

REST IN PEACE
Some sad news to relate: Father Frank Cronin passed away Saturday evening. He was the first administrator of Christ the King and later was pastor here until 1972. He was a professor at OU and occasionally celebrated both daily and weekend Masses here before leaving Athens in 2000.
The funeral Mass for Father Cronin is this Thursday morning, August 6, at 11:00 at St. Mary’s Church in Shadyside.
There are plans for a Mass at CTK for Father Cronin at 10:30 August 16. Check the bulletin or this webpage for further details.
May Father Cronin and all who have died, rest in the peace of our Lord.
WORDS OF LIFE -- Bulletin Briefs
Christians are indistinguishable from other men either by nationality, language or customs….
And yet there is something extraordinary about their lives. They live in their own countries as though they were only passing through. …Like others, they marry and have children, but they do not expose them [to die]. They share their meals, but not their wives.
They live in the flesh, but they are not governed by the desires of the flesh. They pass their days upon earth, but they are citizens of heaven. Obedient to the laws, they yet live on a level that transcends the law. Christians love all men, but all men persecute them. …They live in poverty, but enrich many; they are totally destitute, but possess an abundance of everything. They suffer dishonor, but that is their glory. They are defamed, but vindicated. A blessing is their answer to abuse, deference their response to insult. For the good they do they receive the punishment of malefactors, but even then they, rejoice, as though receiving the gift of life.
