NINETEENTH SUNDAY
IN ORDINARY TIME
August 8/9, 2009

How does Jesus sustain your life today?

Gospel Reflection (John 6:41-51): When a teacher introduces a completely new idea, students sometimes resist it. They may complain “I don’t get it. It doesn’t make sense to me.  When Jesus began teaching the Jews that he himself was the “bread that came down from heaven,” they muttered and murmured in complaint. They thought they knew who Jesus was. But Jesus responds by promising them that if they eat the living bread, they will live forever. He will give his flesh for the life of the world. In the Eucharist, we experience the truth of Jesus’ promise. We receive the living bread and know that we shall live forever.

Discussion Points for Gospel: Look back at the reading. What reasons do the murmurers give for not accepting Jesus’ teaching? What other reasons might they have? Why do you sometimes find it hard to accept new teachings either in religion class or any other class? How does Jesus respond to those who are resisting his teaching?
What are some of the ways we can prepare to celebrate Eucharist so that we experience this sacrament more fully? How can we help other Catholics who may be staying away from Mass for any reason?

Sunday Scripture Readings
Reflection on the Scriptures has become more and more a part of basic Christian spirituality. At times we would like to return to the Sunday Scriptures at home, but we do not have the missalette with us. At other times we may be interested in seeing just what came before or immediately after the reading for the day to gain more insights.
To encourage this encounter with the Scriptures, we will be including in the bulletin the scripture reading references for the current Sunday and the following Sunday. In addition, in our on-line bulletin we will have the actual links to the readings.

QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK
Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

By eating and drinking Jesus’ Body and Blood we not only make a statement of commitment that we want to participate fully in the life of Christ. Our lives should give witness to that belief.
Adults: What is one thing that I can do this week to make my life a living witness to the Body of Christ that I receive in the Eucharist?

Children: What can I do this week to open my heart more fully to Jesus when I receive him in the Eucharist?

FATHER FRANK CRONIN
Father Cronin died last Sunday after a brief illness. He spent much of his life as a priest/professor here in Athens. He was a professor in the English Department of Ohio University from 1966 until 2000. He also served as associate pastor and then pastor of CTK. Father Cronin had many friends among the faculty and students and among the parishioners at both CTK and St. Paul parishes. His funeral was at St. Mary Church, Shadyside, where he served as pastor for seven years after his retirement from OU.
On Sunday, August 16, at CTK, Father Cronin will be remembered at the 10:30 AM liturgy. If you have a memory to share of your time with him, please email your remembrance to Father Marty at mholler@ctkathens.org. The memories will be collected in a booklet for distribution at that time.
Please remember Father Cronin in your prayers.
MASS AT HICKORY CREEK
We will be celebrating the Eucharist at Hickory Creek Nursing Home this Wednesday, August 12, at 2:00 p.m. We expect several residents to attend, and our parishioners are welcome to join us for this Mass.
WELCOME TO OUR NEW YOUTH MINISTER!
Although she has already been hard at work, our new Youth Minister, Kate Kahler, begins her official tenure on Thursday, 6 August (the Feast of the Transfiguration). She joined our Catechetical team this past summer and is looking forward to a productive year working with our youth. Her background includes experiences working with youth as a teacher of theology at St. Edward High School near Cleveland, in parish life as an Assistant Youth Minister and as a Development Director, and in the community as a Probation Officer.
Please feel free to drop in to visit with her and get to know her a little better as she prepares for the year ahead, leading both the Confirmation Program and developing ways to strengthen the Youth Ministry/Youth Group offerings at St. Paul and Christ the King parishes.
CONFIRMATION CELEBRATED NEXT SPRING
Our new Youth Minister, Mrs. Kate Kahler, is organizing our Confirmation Program for all High School students. Information packets have been mailed out to all eligible Confirmation candidates. Please look for them in the mail -- complete and return to the parish office NO LATER than Friday, August 14, PLEASE. Mrs. Kahler can be reached at her office at Christ the King Parish Center at 592-2711 or by e-mail at KKAHLER@ctkathens.org If you are a high school student who has not been Confirmed and do not receive an information letter by Wednesday, please contact Mrs. Kahler or call the parish office, 592-2711.
Check the bulletin for news on the Youth Group as well.
LITURGY BITS AND BYTES

Assumption
On August 15 we celebrate the feast of the Assumption of Mary. This is usually a holy day of obligation unless it falls on a Monday or Saturday. It is a feast of the highest significance. It celebrates Mary’s welcome into heaven. It is a feast for all of us because Mary, the Mother of the Church, has accomplished what each of us hopes and expects to happen. As we believe that Jesus was the first to rise from the dead, so we believe he has also received his mother first into eternity. Eastern traditions called this event the “Dormition” or the “sleeping” of Mary indicating that she did not die but was taken to heaven as if asleep. Pope Pius XII declared the bodily assumption of Mary a dogma of the church in 1950.
There are two curious traditions connected to this feast: 1) If you cut back lilies from Easter and planted them, they should bloom on August 15th and 2) A swim in the ocean on today’s feast was said to insure good health. You can give them a try and see what happens.
