NINETEENTH SUNDAY
OF ORDINARY TIME

August 9/10, 2008

Name someone who is courageous. When have you needed courage?

Gospel Reflection (Matthew 14:22-33): There are really two stories in today’s gospel. One is about Jesus; the other, about Peter. As the gospel begins, Jesus is alone in prayer. His disciples are in a boat crossing the Sea of Galilee. In the dark of night, a storm threatens the boat. Just as the boat is about to be swamped, Jesus comes to rescue his disciples. He is walking on the water!
The second story tells how Peter’s faith is put to the test. He thinks that he can join Jesus, walking on the stormy waters. But when Peter is out of the boat, surrounded by the menacing waves, he has second thoughts. In his fear, he begins to sink. After saving Peter, Jesus asks him why he doubted and did not trust him.

Discussion Points for Gospel: When life seems tough and you are afraid, how will you turn to Christ with trust?

Sunday Scripture Readings
Reflection on the Scriptures has become more and more a part of basic Christian spirituality. At times we would like to return to the Sunday Scriptures at home, but we do not have the missalette with us. At other times we may be interested in seeing just what came before or immediately after the reading for the day to gain more insights.
To encourage this encounter with the Scriptures, we will be including in the bulletin the scripture reading references for the current Sunday and the following Sunday. In addition, in our on-line bulletin we will have the actual links to the readings.

Nineteenth Sunday of Ordinary time

Jesus urged Peter to come to him, and he reached out and grasped his hand when Peter became fearful.

Adults: How is Jesus urging me to come to him across “stormy waters”?

Please include your own name and phone number so that we might get in touch with you to know how to approach our invitation to your friend.
Also on the card, there will be other ways in which you can support RCIA this year. Please consider how you might be able to be of help for our candidates and the team. Thank you.
RELIGIOUS EDUCATION
Are you a faith-filled person who loves children? Perhaps you are being called to be a person who “echoes God’s Word” as a catechist. The Religious Education Program has openings for catechists at all grade levels (pre-K through 8). We meet on Sundays at 12:15 or Tuesdays at 6:30 during the school year. If you are interested and would like to know more about how you can contribute, please contact Nancy Denhart, Director of Religious Education 590-3302 or 592-2711 or ndenhart@ctkathens.org for an appointment. We do provide in-service and help for all in the catechetical program.

The cost is $25 and is due by August 15. Check out the bulletin boards in church and the PC for registration forms and the flyer.
LITURGY BITS AND BYTES
The Bread Which is Received
The General Instruction of the Roman Missal is quite clear: “It is most desirable that the faithful should receive the body of the Lord in hosts consecrated at the same Mass and should share in the cup when it is permitted. Communion is thus a clearer sign of sharing in the sacrifice that is actually being celebrated.”

REST IN PEACE
We offer our sympathy and prayers to George and Nancy Bain and their family. George’s brother, Norman, passed away recently. May he and all who have died, rest in the peace of our Lord.
RESPECT LIFE
The argument that the government should not be involved in such a personal decision as abortion is fatally flawed. The government got “too involved” in abortion when it claimed (through the Supreme Court) to have the authority to deprive some human beings of their right to life. Also, when someone’s “choice” destroys someone else’s life, that choice is no longer merely a personal, private matter.
