TWENTY-THIRD SUNDAY
OF ORDINARY TIME

September 6/7, 2008

How do you experience Jesus in the midst of your family? Your parish? Your neighborhood?

Gospel Reflection (Matthew 18:15-20): One of the ways Christians show their love for one another is to offer guidance and correction. Jesus expects his disciples to be “watchers,” as Ezekiel was. When a member of the community seriously sins against them, they are to speak about it to that person in private. If the sinner refuses to listen, two or three disciples are to offer correction. And if that fails, the entire community should call the sinner to repent.
The voice of the Christian community is to be taken seriously. Jesus gives us this assurance: “Where two or three are gathered in my name, there I am in their midst.” How do you think correcting someone can be a sign of love? Are you willing to do it?

Discussion Points for Gospel: What is the connection between warning someone who is doing something wrong and loving them? Why is the first step “keep it between the two of you?” When someone corrects you, how does it feel? At first? Later? Do you listen? Did you change?

Sunday Scripture Readings
Reflection on the Scriptures has become more and more a part of basic Christian spirituality. At times we would like to return to the Sunday Scriptures at home, but we do not have the missalette with us. At other times we may be interested in seeing just what came before or immediately after the reading for the day to gain more insights.
To encourage this encounter with the Scriptures, we will be including in the bulletin the scripture reading references for the current Sunday and the following Sunday. In addition, in our on-line bulletin we will have the actual links to the readings.

QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK
Twenty-Third Sunday of Ordinary time

Conflict holds the potential for growth and positive change, but it also hold the potential for violence and division. It all depends on how we deal with it. This is a week to think about the ways in which we handle conflict in our lives.

Adults: How do I manage conflict in my family or workplace? Do I first approach the “offender” face to face or is gossip my initial reaction?

Children: What do I do when I feel hurt by a relative or a friend? Can I ask Jesus to help me deal with the situation?

MASS AT HICKORY CREEK
We will be celebrating the Eucharist at Hickory Creek Nursing Home this Wednesday, September 10, at 2:00 p.m. We expect several residents to attend, and our parishioners are welcome to join us for this Mass.
FALL MINISTRY SCHEDULE
Nancy is working on the Fall ministry schedule: September 20/21 through December 20/21. Check your calendars and give her with any dates you CAN’T minister: nsand@ctkathens.org or phone 592-2711.
WHY CATHOLIC?
JOURNEY THROUGH THE CATECHISM

CTK is sponsoring a Why Catholic? retreat this Monday, September 8, from 6:00 to 9:00 pm. All parishioners are welcome and encouraged to attend -- bring a friend!
We are continuing discussion and study with Book IV -- Christian Prayer: Deepening My Experience with God this fall. Come, Taste and See! Join a small group, and reflect on the Sacraments.
Sign up Sundays for Why Catholic? are September 21 and September 28. Registration cards will be in the Gathering Space, or call Chris and Chuck Hart at 740-592-4030.
The six-week sessions begin the week of October 5 and will continue through the week of November 9.

FEASTS & CELEBRATIONS
September 8 -- the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Tradition says Mary was born in Jerusalem after her mother Anna and her father Joachim had been married more than twenty years with no children. Mary’s birth brought her parents joy, and we are joyful, too -- because Mary brings salvation to all of us with the birth of Jesus.

A Big THANK YOU from Children’s Liturgy of the Word
As this ministry transitions to religious education for Pre-K and Kindergarten, I would like to take this opportunity to personally thank Fr. Marty, the music ministry for “our song,” the teachers, parents, and the children themselves for making it possible for our youngest members of the Body of Christ to receive the scriptures in an age-appropriate setting during Liturgy of the Word on Sunday morning. This ministry has blessed me beyond measure. Thank you. Suzanne Vazzano.
THE CATHOLIC LADIES OF COLUMBIA
CLC members will meet this Monday, September 8, at 6:30 P.M., at Christ the King. Members are asked to bring personal hygiene items for the female military personnel serving overseas. Please phone regrets to Adeline Gura, at 593-6983 or Marguerite Kostival at 698-2200.
LITURGY BITS AND BYTES
 Receiving on the Tongue
Receiving on the tongue grew from the time when the emphasis on unworthiness dictated that no one except the priest with his consecrated fingers could touch the host. This changed the theology of the Eucharist considerably from the early Church, where the reception of Eucharist still resembled a meal.
