TWENTY-FIFTH SUNDAY
OF ORDINARY TIME
CATECHETICAL SUNDAY
September 20/21, 2008

When have you been a witness to God’s generosity?

Gospel Reflection (Matthew 20:1-16a): Our ideas of justice are some times selfish and petty when we compare them to God’s justice. That is why some people are surprised that Jesus would tell a story in which five groups of workers who began at different times should all be paid the same at sundown.
Yet Jesus points out that those who worked all day received a fair wage and a wage they agreed on from the start. The landowner, who represents God in the story, asks “Are you envious because I am generous?” The answer for many people is yes. They have forgotten that God’s ways are not our ways. They do not remember that the blessings of God’s kingdom are a gift to us.

Discussion Points for Gospel: Have you ever thought, “That’s not fair?” How did thinking like that make you feel? Did you ever consider that maybe your thinking was wrong rather than the other person’s actions? We have been told that God’s ways are not our ways. What does that mean in this parable?

Sunday Scripture Readings
Reflection on the Scriptures has become more and more a part of basic Christian spirituality. At times we would like to return to the Sunday Scriptures at home, but we do not have the missalette with us. At other times we may be interested in seeing just what came before or immediately after the reading for the day to gain more insights.
To encourage this encounter with the Scriptures, we will be including in the bulletin the scripture reading references for the current Sunday and the following Sunday. In addition, in our on-line bulletin we will have the actual links to the readings.

QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK
Twenty-Fifth Sunday of Ordinary Time

The parable of the vineyard laborers thoroughly debunks the conventional notion of accomplishments and rewards. The revelation is that God’s nature moves on a distinctively different plane than ours. In the story we want to see God acting within the strict limits of the human plane. But the goodness of God far outweighs anything we can imagine.

Adults: When have I, in my humanness, limited the scope and breadth of God’s grace?

Children: In your experience, when has God acted in a way that went beyond your expectations?

STEWARDSHIP OF TIME AND TALENTS

This weekend we offer another opportunity to sign-up to participate in various ministries — the sharing of our time and talents — for the coming year.

WHY CATHOLIC?
JOURNEY THROUGH THE CATECHISM
sign-up September 20/21 and 27/28

We are continuing discussion and study with Book IV--Christian Prayer: Deepening My Experience with God this fall. Come, Taste and See! Join a small group, and reflect on prayer. Registration cards will be in the Gathering Space, or call Chris and Chuck Hart at 740-592-4030.
The six-week sessions begin the week of October 5 and will continue through the week of November 9.
If you are already a part of a small group, please contact your small group leader. If you are already in a group from last session you do not have to submit a card.
If you have been a part of a Why Catholic? group, why not make a personal invitation to a friend or a neighbor. There is no requirement, all you have to do is to join in.

CATECHETICAL SUNDAY
This year’s theme is “The Word of God in the Life and Mission of the Church.” Catechetical Sunday is a wonderful opportunity to reflect upon the role that each person plays, by virtue of Baptism, in handing on the faith and being a witness to the Gospel as well as to rededicating himself or herself to this mission as a community of faith.
FEASTS & CELEBRATIONS
September 23 -- St. Padre Pio
(1968)
Born to farmers in southern Italy, eight years after he became a Capuchin Friar, the five wounds of Our Lord’s Passion (stigmata) appeared on his body. Despite intense personal and physical suffering, he remained dedicated to prayer.
September 26 -- Sts. Cosmas and Damian (303)
These saints were Arab brothers who studied medicine in Syria and lived their Christian faith by treating people without charge. Unfortunately, this was during a time of persecution and such virtue made them targets of persecution. They were martyred for their faith.

NEWMAN COMMUNITY NEWS
Last week we got to know one another through an evening of “speed greeting” and searched scripture to find out just what fellowship means to us as Christians.
Join us Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the PC as we celebrate the year of St. Paul at our education meeting. All are welcome — see you there!

New to campus? The First Year Student Retreat is coming up October 3-4 from 5 p.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the PC. It’s a really fun and relaxed overnight where you’ll meet fellow new students and learn about getting through your first quarters at OU — with a Catholic twist. The best part? It’s free! Talk to or e-mail Chris Andrews (ca117906@ohio.edu) for more information. Deadline to register is September 29.

FAITH FORMATION EVENTS AND NEWS

LITURGY BITS AND BYTES
Receiving the Sacred Body and the Sacred Blood
Although we believe that Christ is truly and totally present in both the consecrated bread and the consecrated wine, the fullness of the sign is receiving both. Christ said, “Take and eat,” and “Take and drink.” The General Instruction of the Roman Missal states: “The sign of communion is more complete when given under both kinds, since in that form the sign of the eucharistic meal appears more clearly. The intention of Christ that the new and eternal covenant be ratified in his blood is better expressed, as is the relation of the eucharistic banquet to the heavenly banquet.”

There is an informational meeting for those who have an interest in finding out more about what it means to be Catholic. It will be held in the CTK Parish Center following 6:15 Mass.
CTK PARISH CENTER
Just a reminder that the Parish Center is open from 9:00 am till 9:00 pm Mondays - Thursdays as a quiet place to study. The lounge in the Center will have hot coffee in the evenings. And we’re wireless! Bring your laptop and study!

PEACE & JUSTICE COMMITTEE
On Monday, September 22, at 6pm, the members of the Peace & Justice Committee will be holding an informal discussion about the national Jubilee USA conference that was held in Columbus in July. Please join us in the CTK library to talk about some ways that rich countries can end the severe hunger and poverty afflicting so much of the world.
KAIROS PRISON MINISTRY
Prison ministry is an important aspect of Christian life; it is one of the corporal works of mercy. Five of our area priests have been taking turns saying mass each week at the Hocking Correctional Facility (HCF) for the past fifteen years.
The Kairos Prison Ministry, an interdenominational program, is an effective way of bringing the love of Christ to those in prison and it follows a retreat format that many of us are familiar with. It will be held at the HCF October 2-5. CTK is joining other churches in the area to support this effort.
The program relies on praying for the success of the retreat throughout its entirety from 3:00 pm October 2 to 9:00 pm October 5. There will be a sign up sheet in the Gathering Space. Please choose a time when you’re able to commit yourself to pray, wherever you may be.
We can supply baked goodies for refreshments and to share with inmates. Bake at least two dozen cookies (nothing fancy) and bring them to the Parish Center Saturday, September 25, before 3:00 pm. Each two dozen cookies must be packed in a separate bag and identified; i.e. oatmeal, sugar, etc.
KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS
Fr. Patala Council #1716 of the KofC Annual Wiener Roast is Saturday, October 4, 6:00pm at the home of Dave and Pat Vogt, 6696 Lemaster Road. Bring a side dish or dessert to share -- maybe even a potential member?! The Council will provide the wieners and drinks! RSVP by October 1. For more info and to RSVP contact Dave at 797.4702 or dvogt@mathewsinsurance.com
See you at the October monthly meeting on Sunday, the 5th!
HELP NEEDED
Terry and Mary Cummings-Smith are both experiencing some health problems that necessitate them being house-bound. We’re looking for volunteers to bring food to them for a week or two beginning next week. You can contact them at 592-6357.
