26TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
FEAST OF ST. VINCENT DE PAUL
September 26/27, 2009

Where do you see evil in the world? How do you respond?

Gospel Reflection (Mark 9:38-43, 45, 47-48): Like Moses before him, Jesus wants God’s healing power to be shared by as many as possible. When a disciple complains about a man who is healing in Jesus’ name but who is not one of their company, Jesus assures him, “Anyone who is not against us is with us.  Doing good is not to be restricted to an exclusive few. Giving good example to the “little ones” or those of simple faith will be rewarded. Anyone who leads them astray deserves punishment.
Since our hands, our feet, and our eyes can lead us into sin, we are to use them in ways that honor God’s Kingdom of love, justice, and peace. By doing so, we help to make God’s reign visible in our midst.

Discussion Points for Gospel: Recall some of your experiences of having substitute teachers in religion or other classes. How did you and your classmates treat these substitutes? Why? When new pastors or other parish leaders arrive, how do you think they should be treated? How might we apply what Jesus says in today’s gospel to the ways in which we support those who serve in his name?
In what ways can people your age give a good example to young children at home, at school, or in the community?
What does Jesus say about those who lead the little ones astray?

Sunday Scripture Readings
Reflection on the Scriptures has become more and more a part of basic Christian spirituality. At times we would like to return to the Sunday Scriptures at home, but we do not have the missalette with us. At other times we may be interested in seeing just what came before or immediately after the reading for the day to gain more insights.
To encourage this encounter with the Scriptures, we will be including in the bulletin the scripture reading references for the current Sunday and the following Sunday. In addition, in our on-line bulletin we will have the actual links to the readings.

QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK
Twenty-sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time

At times we may resent others who have gifts that we wish we could have. This can even happen within the Christian faith community. It is important to always be thankful for the gifts we do have.
Adults: Do I feel uncomfortable or envious of the gifts of others? What have I learned from these feelings?

Children: How might I respond in a Christian manner to others who have gifts and talents other than I have?

FEAST OF ST. VINCENT DE PAUL
September 27 is the feast day of St. Vincent de Paul (1580-1660). We thank God for the life of St. Vincent de Paul and for the immeasurable amount of good that has been done through his inspiration. In so many parishes in the world, the St. Vincent de Paul Society has been an organization dedicated to serving the poor.
We are grateful for the St. Vincent de Paul organization in our parishes, whose members have served the poor over these many years. May we continue to dedicate ourselves to this noble work.
NEW DVDS IN THE LIBRARY
We have received several DVDs titled “The Message of Garabandal” from The Workers of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, Lindenhurst, NY, (Garabandal Center in the U.S). Over the past two centuries, Our Blessed Lady has appeared to many individuals, but none of her appearances can compare to the frequency (over 2000) and spiritual magnitude (locutions) of the apparitions received by four children over a four-year period from June, 1961 to November, 1965 in the small village of Garbandal located in the Cantabrian Mountains in northern Spain. Officially, the Catholic Church has not made a final decision on the authenticity of these alleged apparitions and is continuing its investigation. The DVD tells the whole story from the beginning.
Please check out the DVDs, newsletters, spiritual cards, pamphlets and other materials available in the CTK library.

It is also our opportunity to offer our prayers and wishes to Peggy as she leaves for Northern Iraq on Oct. 2 and do the same for Art who will go to the Palestinian Territories later this year.

LITURGY BITS AND BYTES
Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion
At every parish Mass the extraordinary ministery of Holy Communion have the great privilege of administering, along with the ordained ministers, the Body and Blood of Jesus to those who come forward to receive the Lord. This is a very prayerful, joyous, and humbling ministry. Many people say, “Oh, I could never do that. I’m not worthy.” None of us are worthy. If only those who were worthy could serve, we’d have no ministers at all! Most parishes need additional ministers both at liturgy and to visit the sick and homebound. Those who perform this ministry are quick to tell how their service is a gift that is returned many times over. This is one way to serve the parish community.
