TWENTY-SIXTH SUNDAY
OF ORDINARY TIME
FEAST OF ST. VINCENT DE PAUL
September 27/28 , 2008

How does your parish respond to the Lord’s call to work in his vineyard?

Gospel Reflection (Matthew 21:28-32): Jesus tells a parable to a group of religious leaders. He wants them to figure out which one of the sons did his father’s will. Was it the one who said yes but never showed up? Or was it the one who said no but later repented and carried out the father’s wishes. Sometimes people can deceive us by smooth talk. But God is never deceived. Like Jesus, our lives can be a “yes” to God the Father in word and deed.

Discussion Points for Gospel: Have you ever said, “yes” to someone and then not done what you agreed to do? Did you ever say “no” to someone who asked you (like a parent or teacher) but then regretted it and changed your mind? Jesus is making it clear that sinners who repent are entering the kingdom before the priests and elders who did not repent and believe. What do you think of this?

Sunday Scripture Readings
Reflection on the Scriptures has become more and more a part of basic Christian spirituality. At times we would like to return to the Sunday Scriptures at home, but we do not have the missalette with us. At other times we may be interested in seeing just what came before or immediately after the reading for the day to gain more insights.
To encourage this encounter with the Scriptures, we will be including in the bulletin the scripture reading references for the current Sunday and the following Sunday. In addition, in our on-line bulletin we will have the actual links to the readings.

QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK
Twenty-Sixth Sunday of Ordinary Time

Change is set before us today as a way to deepen our relationship with Jesus. Sometimes reflecting on past experiences helps us change in the future.

Adults: In what ways have I resembled both sons in today's Gospel?

Children: What stories have helped me become a better Christian?

FEAST OF ST. VINCENT DE PAUL

Saturday, September 27, is the feast of St. Vincent de Paul (1580-1660). Three hundred and fifty years later, his dedication to the pastoral needs of the poor continues throughout the world. In our own parishes, the St. Vincent de Paul society, through generous donations of both money and time, serves in a substantial way the needs of the poor in our own county.
We celebrate his inspiration. Today there is an “open house” in our food pantry. Please stop by to see the food pantry to get a better idea of this wonderful work. The food pantry is located in the parish center off Playground.

WHEN WE PRAY AT CHRIST THE KING:
We bow to the altar as we enter the church. It is a sign of reverence and a reminder for what primarily happens in this space: the Eucharist. The altar is the sign of both the sacrifice and the meal. It is also the symbol for Christ.
As we leave the church, we bow once again as a sign of reverence and as a reminder that we take the love of Christ with us into the world.
LITURGY BITS AND BYTES
Communion Procession

Have you ever thought about it that way? That coming up to receive the Body and Blood of Christ is a procession? That is what it’s called. It’s not just getting in line to receive for oneself, but a processing up together in communion with one another. That is one reason there is a “communion song.”
