28TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
VOCATION AWARENESS SUNDAY
October 10/11, 2009

Of what does your wealth consist? How does your wealth serve the poor?

Gospel Reflection (Mark 10: 17-27): The rich young man in this story is like a mountain climber who has almost reached the summit. But the final stretch will be more difficult than the distance he has already come. He comes to seek wisdom from Jesus about how to achieve everlasting life. He assures the Good Teacher that he has kept the commandments since he was a child. Jesus looks at him with love and challenges him to do one thing more. If he wants to reach the summit of treasure in heaven, the young man must sell his possessions and follow Jesus. This he cannot do. So he goes away sad.
Jesus assures his disciples that entering the kingdom of God is no easy matter. Those who are attached to their possessions will have a more difficult time. However, those who rely on God to achieve the impossible can do all good things.

Discussion Points: Look back at this gospel story. Place yourself in the sandals of the rich young man. When you approach Jesus, what are you expecting? When you tell him about how you have kept the commandments, what are you hoping he will say? Why do you think Jesus looks at you with love? What is your reaction to the one thing more Jesus says you must do? What are you telling yourself as you go away sad? Might you feel differently later on? Why?
In what ways do you already share or give away some of your possessions? What message is Jesus giving us about our attitudes towards riches? Do you think this gospel story has a happy ending? Why?

Sunday Scripture Readings
Reflection on the Scriptures has become more and more a part of basic Christian spirituality. At times we would like to return to the Sunday Scriptures at home, but we do not have the missalette with us. At other times we may be interested in seeing just what came before or immediately after the reading for the day to gain more insights.
To encourage this encounter with the Scriptures, we will be including in the bulletin the scripture reading references for the current Sunday and the following Sunday. In addition, in our on-line bulletin we will have the actual links to the readings.

QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK
Twenty-eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Unable to let go of his many possessions, the rich man was not free enough to respond to Jesus’ invitation to go beyond the Law to a new way of living Christian discipleship.
Adults: What holds me back from giving and caring more generously?

Children: How can I be more generous this week?

RESPECT LIFE MONTH
“It is not good for man to be alone.” (Gen 2:18) God has made us in his own image and likeness, allowing us to reflect certain attributes of our Creator. Although in an infinitely limited way, we mirror the nature of God through out intellect, will and social nature. “Then God said, ‘Let us make man in our image, after our likeness.’” (Gen 1:260 God, One and Triune, has allowed us to reflect his spiritual, divine and Trinitarian nature.
The reciprocal love between the Father and the Son is so great that a third Person results from it: the Holy Spirit. By analogy, when husband and wife are united in love, they are able to produce a third person: a child, a fruit of their love. The conception of a child is a reflection of the Holy Trinity, of God himself.

Today life is being attacked from every angle: abortion robs children of their fundamental right to life; embryonic stem cell research involves destroying living human beings for speculative medical research; legalized assisted suicide and euthanasia arise out of the false view that some lives are not worth living, that some people are not worth protecting; and the attempt to redefine marriage is undermining the sacred institution that God established at the very beginning of creation. “What God has joined together, no human being must separate.” (Mk 10:9) No human being has the authority to separate husband from wife, nor procreation from marriage.

LITURGY BITS AND BYTES
Ministers of Hospitality -- Ushers and Greeters
Each Sunday the first thing we do in church is to gather. As a Christian community we gather FOR each other. The first ritual we should experience therefore is a ritual of welcome, of courtesy, of hospitality. Just as all Christians are called to read God’s Word (not just Lectors), and all are called to minister the Lord’s real presence, (not just Ministers of Holy Communion), so all of us (not just ushers and greeters) are called to be ministers of hospitality. And like other ministries, there are special ministers of hospitality. They are very important. Often an usher or greeter can set the tone of our readiness to experience God more than any other minister. They are usually the first to greet us when we arrive for Mass. Their job is to be sure that the church is ready for the community’s arrival: heat or A/C on, windows opened or closed, pews and worship aids neat, bulletins ready for distribution. They are also there to attend to any emergencies which might occur during Mass. They facilitate seating at crowded Masses, the taking up of the collection, and the communion procession. On special holydays they can have additional functions such as handing out palms or candles, or directing processions. Both men and women with the ability to be gracious hosts and to make people feel welcome are called to this ministry.
