ALL SAINTS
October 31/November 1, 2009

When does being Jesus’ disciple require courage?

Gospel Reflection (Matthew 5:1-12a): This reading from the Gospel of Matthew contains the Beatitudes. These statements are a summary of the way to sainthood for all the thousands and thousands of people who have followed Jesus faithfully. They show how the followers of Jesus today are to live for God’s kingdom. All the rewards promised here will have their fulfillment in God’s kingdom in heaven.
Jesus calls us all to holiness. By following the teachings of Jesus and the Church, celebrating the sacraments, and trusting in the guidance of the Holy Spirit, the way to heaven lies open for us. Our journey of faith may not be an easy one. There will be many hardships and challenges along the way. But if we walk humbly with our God, we will one day reach the place of justice and peace where God reigns forever.

Discussion Points: The Beatitudes show us that God knows about all the suffering and pain in the world. They also show us how God wants us to respond to it: with mercy, with peacemaking, with a hunger and thirst for holiness (right living and justice). The Beatitudes give us a hint of what we pray for when we pray “Your kingdom come.” The Beatitudes are not just for the saints of long ago. They are for us today.
How will you show mercy today? How will you make peace? What makes you sad or happy? (Are you too centered on your own life and unconcerned about bigger problems in the world?) Choose a beatitude and tell one way you could put it into action this week.

Sunday Scripture Readings
Reflection on the Scriptures has become more and more a part of basic Christian spirituality. At times we would like to return to the Sunday Scriptures at home, but we do not have the missalette with us. At other times we may be interested in seeing just what came before or immediately after the reading for the day to gain more insights.
To encourage this encounter with the Scriptures, we will be including in the bulletin the scripture reading references for the current Sunday and the following Sunday. In addition, in our on-line bulletin we will have the actual links to the readings.

QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK
All Saints

We know that we can draw strength and inspiration from the canonized saints, but it is also important to remember that the non-canonized saints are also available to us for strength and inspiration.
Adults: Who are the persons that have helped or inspired me to become a better Christian?

Children: Who is the saint or person I admire most and would like to imitate? What have I learned from him or her?

MEMORIAL BOOK OF THE DEAD
During November, the Church encourages us to remember, with special prayers, those who have died.
We have placed a Memorial Book in the Gathering Space at Church. You are encouraged to add the names of your loved ones who have died. They will be remembered at all the liturgies during the month of November.
Also as a special remembrance, we invite those who have lost family members during the past year (siblings, parents) to bring a picture of their loved ones (3x5 or 4x6). We will display these pictures (we have appropriately sized frames) in our seasonal space near the Memorial Book of the Dead.

“May the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.”

THE BISHOP IS COMING! -- Bishop Conlon is making a pastoral visit here November 7-10, and he is offering an inter-generational opportunity to learn as a household during his visit. He will be addressing the Mission of the Church.
You are invited to share in a potluck followed by a presentation for adults and teens. While the adults meet, the catechetical staff will lead lessons prepared for children in grades 1-8; childcare is offered for preschoolers. The program will be offered three times: 6:30 PM Saturday, November 7; 12:30 PM Sunday, November 8; and 5:30 PM Tuesday, November 10. RE classes have been canceled so as to encourage families to attend a session with the Bishop.
It’s here. . .

Important News!
Bishop Conlon will be in town to share liturgy, a meal and teach us about the mission of the church. PLEASE mark your calendars and come to any of the Masses with the Bishop. Then plan on gathering at the potluck Sunday, November 8, at 12:15 to meet Bishop and hear his wise words for us. This is in place of our regular youth group meeting. You don’t want to miss this! Good food, good company and a good time for all.
NEWMAN COMMUNITY will meet this Wednesday at the Parish Center at 7:15.
A little over $200 was raised at last Sunday’s Pancake Breakfast fund-raiser. Newman members thank all those who came to eat and enjoy pancakes! The next breakfast is scheduled for January 24, 2010 -- mark your calendars now and plan to attend.
LITURGY BITS AND BYTES

Funerals
Since the death of John F. Kennedy, Jr. many have asked about cremation. Does the Church allow cremation? Cremation has been allowed since 1963 as long as it is not chosen as a way of denying the Christian belief about the resurrection of the body. Although cremation is now permitted by the Church, there is a clear preference for the body of the deceased to be present for the funeral rites. If cremation is the choice, it can follow after the funeral service. When this is not possible (for a number of legitimate reasons) ashes may be present at the funeral liturgy provided that they are treated with the same respect as is given to a body. The cremated remains are then to be buried in a cemetery or columbarium.

ALL SAINTS -- On the feast of All Saints, we honor those men and women who, whether they’ve been canonized or not, have led lives of heroic virtue that set an example for all Christians. They have truly witnessed to their faith. Although no two saints are alike (just as no two people are exactly alike), there are certain qualities that they all share. This day is the harvest homecoming of the church. Through the image of autumn’s ingathering, we celebrate and honor the saints.
Halloween is the night of October 31. The word means “Hallow’s Eve.” “Hallows” is another word for saints. November 1 is All Saints’ Day. November 2 is All Souls’ Day. Together these days once were called “Hallowmas.”
So Halloween isn’t just the way we end October. It also is the way we begin November. On Halloween night, the holy eve of All Saints’ Day, we begin the church’s month to remember the dead.
ALL SOULS DAY, Monday, November 2, is a special day on which we remember our deceased relatives and friends.
ELECTION DAY is November 3 -- Be prepared to vote! Visit the Catholic Conference website: www.ohiocathconf.org/ for information about the various issues on the ballot this year from the perspective of our faith. It is informative, challenging and non-partisan.
In the Catholic tradition, responsible citizenship is a virtue; participation in the political process is a moral obligation. (from Faithful Citizenship)
