- QUESTIONS OF THE
WEEK
- All Saints
-
- We know that we can draw
strength and inspiration from the canonized saints, but it is
also important to remember that the non-canonized saints are
also available to us for strength and inspiration.
- Adults: Who are the persons that have helped
or inspired me to become a better Christian?
Children: Who is the saint or person I admire most
and would like to imitate? What have I learned from him or her? MEMORIAL BOOK OF THE DEAD
During November, the Church encourages
us to remember, with special prayers, those who have died.
We have placed a Memorial Book in the Gathering
Space at Church. You are encouraged to add the names of your
loved ones who have died. They will be remembered at all the
liturgies during the month of November.
Also as a special remembrance, we invite those
who have lost family members during the past year (siblings,
parents) to bring a picture of their loved ones (3x5 or 4x6).
We will display these pictures (we have appropriately sized frames)
in our seasonal space near the Memorial Book of the Dead.
May the souls of all the faithful departed, through
the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.

Funerals
Since
the death of John F. Kennedy, Jr. many have asked about cremation.
Does the Church allow cremation? Cremation has been allowed since
1963 as long as it is not chosen as a way of denying the Christian
belief about the resurrection of the body. Although cremation
is now permitted by the Church, there is a clear preference for
the body of the deceased to be present for the funeral rites.
If cremation is the choice, it can follow after the funeral service.
When this is not possible (for a number of legitimate reasons)
ashes may be present at the funeral liturgy provided that they
are treated with the same respect as is given to a body. The
cremated remains are then to be buried in a cemetery or columbarium.

SAINTS -- On the feast of All Saints, we honor those men
and women who, whether theyve been canonized or not, have
led lives of heroic virtue that set an example for all Christians.
They have truly witnessed to their faith. Although no two saints
are alike (just as no two people are exactly alike), there are
certain qualities that they all share. This day is the harvest
homecoming of the church. Through the image of autumns
ingathering, we celebrate and honor the saints.
Halloween is the night of October 31. The word
means Hallows Eve. Hallows is another
word for saints. November 1 is All Saints Day. November
2 is All Souls Day. Together these days once were called
Hallowmas.
So Halloween isnt just the way we end
October. It also is the way we begin November. On Halloween night,
the holy eve of All Saints Day, we begin the churchs
month to remember the dead. ALL SOULS DAY, Monday,
November 2, is a special day on which we remember our deceased
relatives and friends. ELECTION DAY is November
3 -- Be prepared to vote! Visit the Catholic Conference website:
www.ohiocathconf.org/
for information about the various issues on the ballot this year
from the perspective of our faith. It is informative, challenging
and non-partisan.

obligation. (from Faithful Citizenship)
