THIRTY-THIRD SUNDAY
IN ORDINARY TIME
November 15/16, 2008

Who has affirmed your talents? Who needs your affirmation of their talents?

Gospel Reflection (Matthew: 14-30): Why do you think Jesus told his disciples the parable in today’s reading? Perhaps he does not want them to mistake being humble with hiding ones skills and abilities. Each of the three servants receives a certain amount of money from the master. The first two servants use their gift wisely and increase their master’s investment. But the third servant, out of fear and lack of self-confidence, buries the money. When the master returns, that servant has nothing to offer him but the small amount received in the first place.

Discussion Points for Gospel: When the wise servants report to their master, he says, “Come share your master’s joy.” Have you ever felt joy after you have done a good job at something? When God gives talents and blessings, what does he expect? What does it mean to “settle accounts?” Why does the third servant bury his funds? Have you ever been afraid to do something good? What makes you afraid? In the first reading, the woman was praised for “fear of the Lord.” In this gospel, fear got the servant into trouble. What is the difference between “fear” and “fear of the Lord?”

Sunday Scripture Readings
Reflection on the Scriptures has become more and more a part of basic Christian spirituality. At times we would like to return to the Sunday Scriptures at home, but we do not have the missalette with us. At other times we may be interested in seeing just what came before or immediately after the reading for the day to gain more insights.
To encourage this encounter with the Scriptures, we will be including in the bulletin the scripture reading references for the current Sunday and the following Sunday. In addition, in our on-line bulletin we will have the actual links to the readings.

QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK
Thirty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time

Not everyone is a gifted storyteller, but we all can share with our family and friends the stories of people and events that have made an impact on our lives. Our faith and our relationship with God are to be passed on, not buried.

Adults: How am I sharing my faith, time and the gifts that God has entrusted to me with my family, friends and coworkers?

Children: How do I share my gifts with my friends and classmates in order to help them?
MEMORIAL BOOK OF THE DEAD
During November, the Church encourages us to remember, with special prayers, those who have died.
We have placed a Memorial Book in the Gathering Space at Church. You are encouraged to add the names of your loved ones who have died. They will be remembered at all the liturgies during the month of November.
Also as a special remembrance, we invite those who have lost family members during the past year (siblings, parents) to bring a small picture of their loved ones. We will display these pictures in our seasonal space near the Memorial Book of the Dead.

Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord.
And Let perpetual light shine upon them.
May they rest in peace. Amen.
May their souls and the souls of all the
Faithful departed through the mercy of God
rest in peace. Amen

RCIA UPDATE
We have over 15 RCIA inquirers from CTK and St. Paul who are discerning their readiness to begin a more intense time of preparation called the catechumenate.
The inquirers from CTK who feel called to proceed will celebrate the Rite of Acceptance (for the unbaptized) or the Rite of Welcoming (for those already baptized) into the catechumenate this weekend at the 10:30 AM Mass.
Please welcome them and pray for them as they continue their journey with our faith community.
RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEWS
Today, November 16, and Tuesday, November 18, the parishes are offering a video for adult education on St. Paul. In the coming weeks your children will study St. Paul and his contributions to our faith. If you want to explore St. Paul with your families check out the faithfirst.com website. We hope you will take advantage of the opportunity to learn more about Paul and his life. (See the following announcement.)
In the coming weeks, the children in the program will be leading the parishes in a food drive to benefit St. Vincent de Paul. 15 % of the goods will also go to My Sister’s Place. Look for the containers near the doors of the churches in the coming weeks. University students: if you are clearing out your cabinets before you leave, please drop off food in the Christ the King Parish Center.
YEAR OF SAINT PAUL VIDEOS -- Get into the Spirit of the Year of Saint Paul with a 90-minute video that unpacks the life and message of Saint Paul while showing the places where he lived and preached. The video for adult faith formation is called Paul: Contending for the Faith, and is part of the Footprints of God series. There will be other Saint Paul videos for children and youth shown at the same time.
The first showing of the videos will be at 12:30 this Sunday, November 16, at CTK with the adults in the church and the children in the Parish Center. The videos will also be shown on Tuesday, November 18, at 6:30 with the adults in the St. Paul Parish Hall and the children in the CTK Parish Center.

CATHOLIC YOUTH GROUP meets today, Sunday, November 16, at St. Paul’s from 12:15-1:30 in the Back Room. Come, meet the leaders, share your faith with other Catholic teens and enjoy a lunch!! The group will engage in service projects as well as study our Catholic faith. The group meets weekly; one week a month the group will do a service project. Next week the group will gather at CTK to help with the St. Vincent de Paul pantry. Dress for the weather and bring gloves. Meet the team leaders in the Parish Center Lounge. For more information contact: Mary Catherine Kennedy: mk291908@ohio.edu or Nancy Denhart: ndenhart@ctkathens.org.
LITURGY BITS AND BYTES
 Singing after Holy Communion

After communion, when we return to our pews, we have the opportunity to continue singing together, to reflect on our relationship with God, and through our baptism and communion, with one another. Our challenge is to act out that relationship when we leave the church building and throughout the week.

RESPECT LIFE
The provision of nutrition and hydration, even by artificial means, should be considered part of ordinary care and therefore obligatory. Withholding fluid and nutrition does not allow any disease to “take its course.” Rather it leads to another cause of death: starvation or dehydration. Starvation and dehydration do not prevent suffering; they cause it. (Dr. George Delgado, Culture of Life Family Services)

These sheets need to be placed in the pantry before the end of each month. It is most important that we maintain these records as our eligibility to receive Federal and State funded food is very important to our pantry. Please make sure that the forms are filled out properly, and that we have the names of all adults living at a given household.
Also please make sure that the date you serve a client is properly recorded in the client book. If a new client, please record the necessary information in the New Client Section of the book.
