OUR LORD
JESUS CHRIST
THE KING
November 21/22, 2009

How does the Kingdom of God differ from earthly kingdoms? How do you help it to spread?

Gospel Reflection (John 18:33b-37): What kind of king is Jesus? In this reading from the passion story in John’s Gospel, Jesus provides us with his own answer. Pontius Pilate was the Roman official who held power in Palestine. He asks Jesus if he is the king of the Jews. Pilate really wants to know whether Jesus might be part of a Jewish revolt against Roman rule. Jesus assures Pilate that his kingdom is not of this world. He is not one who rules by force. However he is a king who came into the world to “testify to the truth.” All who recognize him as “the way and the truth and the life” will hear his voice (John 14:6).
As the Church year comes to a close, we are grateful for the ways in which we have heard our King’s voice in the liturgy this year. We consider how to live the words of Jesus more faithfully as the circle of the new liturgical year begins.

Discussion Points: Trial scenes are often dramatized in movies and on TV. Imagine that you are a Roman soldier who is present at Pilate’s official residence as the prisoner Jesus of Nazareth is being questioned. What might you think when you heard Jesus’ answer to Pilate’s question, “Are you the king of the Jews?” Why might you be surprised when you heard Jesus describe his kingdom? How might you respond when you heard why Jesus had come into the world? How do you think you would feel about this prisoner-king who was facing a possible death sentence?
What are some of the ways people your age can show that they are committed to Jesus as the way, the truth and the life? How can you give evidence that Jesus rules in your life?

Sunday Scripture Readings
Reflection on the Scriptures has become more and more a part of basic Christian spirituality. At times we would like to return to the Sunday Scriptures at home, but we do not have the missalette with us. At other times we may be interested in seeing just what came before or immediately after the reading for the day to gain more insights.
To encourage this encounter with the Scriptures, we will be including in the bulletin the scripture reading references for the current Sunday and the following Sunday. In addition, in our on-line bulletin we will have the actual links to the readings.

QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK
Our Lord Jesus Christ the King

What image immediately comes to mind when you think of a king: Privilege? Wealth? Power? Jesus presents an image of kingship based on concern for others (especially the poor and the weakest among us), responsibility for all, and total sacrifice.
Adults: What changes in attitude do I need to make to follow Jesus’ idea of kingship?

Children: What can I do each day this week to serve others?

MEMORIAL BOOK OF THE DEAD
During November, the Church encourages us to remember, with special prayers, those who have died.
Please add names of loved ones who have died to our Memorial Book in the church. They will be remembered at all the liturgies this month. We will continue to display pictures of your loved ones near the Memorial Book.

“May the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.”

THANK YOU! -- The family of Emma Farrow would like to thank all those from CTK who sent notes and messages of condolences. Sophie Truszka, Patty and Bob Finnearty and family really appreciate the thoughtfulness and prayers from their parish family.

LITURGY BITS AND BYTES
Christ the King

Today is the last Sunday of the church’s liturgical year. Today is a feast that celebrates the reign of the King whose kingdom we have been proclaiming all these ordinary Sundays: “Christ, yesterday and today, the beginning and the end ...”
Next Sunday we will enter into the first Sunday of the new church year. In combination with the Feasts of All Souls and All Saints, this feast makes the statement that we make each Sunday at the conclusion of the Eucharistic Prayer. It is through Him and in Him and with Him in union with the Holy Spirit that all glory and honor belongs to our God forever and ever. Amen.
As we conclude the year we once more affirm in faith that Jesus, the King of glory and the Lord of all, will come again and will rule to the ends of the earth. As we begin the new year of waiting for his return we make a commitment to once again work for the establishment of the kingdom that has been proclaimed in our midst.

DONATION for Habitat for Humanity Faith Build Coalition
Today we present a check to the Habitat For Humanity Faith Build Coalition in the amount of $3,843.00. It is one of many responses of our faith community to the gospel’s expectation to live out the corporal works of mercy. “Whatsoever you do for the least of my brothers and sisters. . .” Mt 25. We have been enriched through this expression of Christian generosity.
Over the past ten years, Christ the King has contributed $33,439.46 to Habitat.
THE GIVING TREE PROJECT -- The Giving Tree will be set up in the Gathering Space next weekend, November 28-29. This year, gift tags for children have been provided to us by the Athens County Children’s Services. Food basket requests have been given to us by St. Vincent DePaul Society. Together with St. Paul’s Parish we hope to provide one gift listed on the tag for each child and a basket of non-perishable food items for needy families. Please stop by the Giving Tree after Mass next week or the following week and pick a gift tag to help members of our community who are in need this Christmas season. Please bring your gifts to the Parish Center TV room no later than Sunday Dec. 13.

Advent Experience for Adults -- What does it mean to be Advent people, “waiting in silence, waiting in hope.” All adults are invited to the activity “Entering Advent Through Poetry and Song” to discuss and experience this reality. It will be offered in the parish center at two times: Thursday December 3, 7-9 PM and Saturday December 5, 1-4 PM (extended time for prayer). You are still welcome to come even if you cannot be there for the whole time. Contact Greg (593-1561, kremer@ohio.edu) with questions.
