FIRST SUNDAY
OF ADVENT
November 29/30, 2008

How can you be more alert to God’s presence this Advent?

Gospel Reflection (Mark 13:33-37): In this reading, Jesus warns us of the need to be awake and watchful for his coming at the end of time and each day of our lives. He compares himself to the master of the house who travels far away. The master places his servants in charge of the estate, each with his or her own work. They are put on alert: “May the master not come suddenly and find you sleeping.” Be on guard. Stay awake!
Advent should be a time of watchfulness for us. We must never be asleep to the daily challenge of Jesus in our lives.

Discussion Points for Gospel: Why is Jesus asking us to be watchful? Why might we sometimes miss the coming of Jesus? Jesus has given each of us our work to do in this world. What is your work for him now? What kind of work do you hope to do for him in the future? Identify three situations in today’s world that challenge you to live the Gospel. How can we be an Advent people, awake to meet those challenges and attentive to all the ways Jesus comes into our lives. Pray this prayer: “Come, Lord, Jesus.”

Sunday Scripture Readings
Reflection on the Scriptures has become more and more a part of basic Christian spirituality. At times we would like to return to the Sunday Scriptures at home, but we do not have the missalette with us. At other times we may be interested in seeing just what came before or immediately after the reading for the day to gain more insights.
To encourage this encounter with the Scriptures, we will be including in the bulletin the scripture reading references for the current Sunday and the following Sunday. In addition, in our on-line bulletin we will have the actual links to the readings.

QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK
First Sunday of Advent

The servants were to complete their tasks while waiting for the master’s return. As with them, the lesson for us is to wait wisely and watch vigilantly for Jesus’ return.

Adults: What does “wait wisely and watch vigilantly” mean for you?

Children: How can you best prepare for Christmas this year?
MEMORIAL BOOK OF THE DEAD
During November, the Church encourages us to remember, with special prayers, those who have died.

Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord.
And Let perpetual light shine upon them.
May they rest in peace. Amen.

May their souls and the souls of all the
Faithful departed through the mercy of God
rest in peace. Amen

A BLESSING FOR AN ADVENT WREATH
Blessed are you, our God, who created light out of darkness and sent your only Son to bring the light of your love to all people.
We pray for your blessing upon this wreath and upon all who kindle these lights. As we gather together in this Advent darkness to await the dawn of Christ, prepare our hearts and homes to receive our Savior.
Come, wisdom of Christ, enlighten our minds.
Come, justice of Christ, ignite our wills.
Come, love of Christ, inflame our hearts.
Come, light of Christ, shine in our lives now and forever.
Amen.

PARISH FOOD DRIVE: The Religious Education program is sponsoring a Food Drive at both parishes to benefit St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry and My Sister’s Place. We are collecting non-perishable items through Sunday, December 14.
Although all types of food are acceptable, we are particularly looking for donations of peanut butter, tuna fish, children’s lunch snacks, cans of fruit. Put items in boxes at the doors of church or in the Msgr. Kish Hall at St. Paul or the Christ the King University Parish Center. If you would like to involve your place of business in the food drive, make a monetary donation or have a question or concerns please contact Nicole Baum Nicole@eduusa.org or Nancy Denhart ndenhart@ctkathens.org or phone: 590-3302.
RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEWS
In the coming weeks the children in the program will be leading the parishes in a food drive to benefit St. Vincent de Paul Society. 15 % of the goods will also go to My Sister’s Place. In addition, the children will create snack bags for the children who receive a gift from the Giving Tree Project and for the children at My Sister’s Place. Look for the containers near the doors of the churches. The children in the Sunday program will work together; each classroom tackling a part of the project, while the Tuesday children will participate by contributing food items for the drive. On December 14, the Sunday classes will gather to sort the collected food for the St. Vincent de Paul and My Sister’s Place, to create the snack bags, to pray and to celebrate the Advent Season at 12:15 in the Parish Center. Tuesday families are asked to drop off food donation by December 9th. On December 16, the Tuesday classes will gather to go Christmas Caroling to area Nursing Homes at 6:30 p.m. A celebration of Advent follows in the Parish Center.
FIRST RECONCILIATION
On December 13 the second grade children receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation (Penance). Please keep the children, their parents and teachers in your prayers as they prepare their hearts to receive the Sacrament.

ST. VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY monthly meeting will be Wednesday, December 3, 7:00 pm in the CTK Parish Center.
LITURGY BITS AND BYTES
Posture during Holy Communion

In many parishes the assembly kneels during Holy Communion. This facilitates going into a private prayer world while the rest of the community is receiving. Communion is meant to be not only with Jesus Christ/God, but also with one another. In many parishes all stand until all have received, acknowledging their communion with one another. Only after all have received do the people kneel, or sit, according to custom.

RESPECT LIFE
“Over more than two centuries of our national history, we Americans have been a people who have struggled to widen the circle of those for whom we acknowledge a common responsibility. . . This great trajectory in our national experience -- that of inclusion -- has been shattered by Roe v. Wade and its progeny. By denying an entire class of human beings the protection of the laws, we have betrayed the best in our tradition.”
(Henry Hyde, former U.S. Congressman)
THE GIVING TREE PROJECT, 2008
Please visit the Giving Tree in the Gathering Space. Along with St. Paul’s Parish we will be providing gifts for 44 area families in need this year. This year all of us have been affected by the world economic crisis, but the impact has been felt most of all by the poor. Please take the opportunity this Christmas to extend your love of Christ to one of his children. Choose a gift recipient from the gift request tags on the tree. Be certain to drop off your gifts at the Parish Center TV Room before noon on Sunday, December 14.
THE PEACE AND JUSTICE COMMITTEE heard from Keith Wasserman, director of Good Works, at the meeting on Monday. The number of requests for shelter from homeless people and families is significantly beyond the shelter’s capacity as winter approaches. Please pray for the homeless and consider joining us in studying and acting on this problem.
For the complex problems we face we must seek solutions that transcend narrowly-defined national interests and serve the good of all our peoples, nations as well as our fragile planet.
--Father Miguel d’Escoto, President, United Nations General Assembly
