THIRD SUNDAY
OF ADVENT
December 13/14, 2008

When have you found your voice and stood up for the truth?

Gospel Reflection (John 1:6-8, 19-28): Today’s gospel reading is about the importance of giving witness. The role of John the Baptist was to testify to the light that is Christ. John the Baptist said he was not the Messiah. His baptism and his preaching were to prepare for the Messiah, one far greater than John. It is the coming of the Messiah that the entire world awaits, and we learn about who the Messiah is from all of today’s readings. Waiting requires patience on our part, and becoming prepared for the one who is coming. How are we preparing to celebrate Jesus’ coming this Christmas as the Messiah? What kindness can we give to others this week to show that we are ready? Pray to the Spirit to know what your work in the world is.

Discussion Points for Gospel: What does John say that he is not? What does John say that he is? Do you think John is clear about what his work is? Why does John baptize? How can we prepare for the one who is coming?

Sunday Scripture Readings
Reflection on the Scriptures has become more and more a part of basic Christian spirituality. At times we would like to return to the Sunday Scriptures at home, but we do not have the missalette with us. At other times we may be interested in seeing just what came before or immediately after the reading for the day to gain more insights.
To encourage this encounter with the Scriptures, we will be including in the bulletin the scripture reading references for the current Sunday and the following Sunday. In addition, in our on-line bulletin we will have the actual links to the readings.

QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK
Third Sunday of Advent

The role of John the Baptist was to make the Lord’s way straight. This implies that there are many crooked and uneven things in our world which would hinder the coming of God’s reign. We, like John the Baptist, must work to clear God’s path.

Adults: Where in my life can I identify habits and attitudes which twist and cover God’s love? What concrete steps can I take to remove them?

Children: How can I more clearly show my love for God, my family, and my friends?

ADVENT RECONCILIATION SERVICE

CHRISTMAS FLOWER MEMORIALS accepted until Thursday, December 18, for the December 20/21 bulletin.

GAUDETE SUNDAY

Gaudete means “rejoice” in Latin. It comes from the first word of the Entrance antiphon on Sunday. The spirit of joy that begins this week comes from the words of Paul, “The Lord is near.” This joyful spirit is marked by the third candle of our Advent wreath, which is rose colored, and the rose colored vestments often used at the Eucharist.

SYMBOLS OF ADVENT AND CHRISTMAS
“The Word became Flesh and made His dwelling among us, and we have seen His glory: The glory of an only Son coming from the Father, filled with enduring love.” John 1:14
The Lights of Christmas ~~ The most obvious symbol of Christmas is lights: Christmas candles, window lights, luminaries, lights on the Advent Wreath and Christmas tree. All signifying that Jesus Christ is the Light of the World.
PARISH FOOD DRIVE ENDS TODAY: The Religious Ed program sponsored food drive benefits the St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry and My Sister’s Place. We are collecting non-perishable items through Sunday, December 14. Put items in boxes in church or the CTK Parish Center.
RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEWS: On December 14, the Sunday classes will gather to sort the collected food from the food drive for the St. Vincent de Paul and My Sister’s Place, to create the snack bags, to pray and to celebrate the Advent Season at 12:15 in the Parish Center. On December 16, the Tuesday classes will gather to go Christmas Caroling to area Nursing Homes at 6:30 p.m. A celebration of Advent follows in the Parish Center.
HELP NEEDED SVDP: Sixty (60) boxes of food will be put together this Wednesday, December 17th at the Parish Center beginning at 5:00 PM. Set up involves lifting cases of can goods etc. Filling food boxes will begin around 5:45. Please come and help. Thanking you in advance.
THANK YOU FROM SVDP: A special Thanks for all the anonymous individuals and families that provided food to the pantry this past year. God Bless You All.
HABITAT FOR HUMANITY NOTE CARDS: The Faith Build Coalition, Athens County Habitat for Humanity has restocked its supply of attractive note cards, and they would be nice stocking stuffers. A dozen cards, 4 each of 3 attractive designs, for a donation of $15.00. For more information contact George Bain (592-3828 or gbain45701@yahoo.com).
LITURGY BITS AND BYTES
Thanksgiving after Holy Communion

Once everyone has received communion, there can be a pause for silent reflection. In some parishes, this is a time for a song of praise and thanksgiving. We offer our eucharistic thanks to God as a community.
