Lifetouch Portrait Appointments: online scheduling until Saturday afternoon  July 24 at 1:00 pm

THE SEVENTEENTH SUNDAY
IN ORDINARY TIME
July 24/25, 2010

Whom do you know who is seeking the Lord? Can you assist in their search?

Gospel Reflection (Luke 11:1-13): What a wonderful scene Luke paints for us today! The disciples watch Jesus at prayer. They see how much prayer means to him. One of them gets up the nerve to ask, “Lord, will you teach us to pray?” And Jesus responds by sharing the Lord’s Prayer with them. (This is a shorter version than the one we pray from Matthew 6:9-13.) Then Jesus completes his lesson prayer by telling two parables. The first urges us to persist in prayer. The second reminds us that we do not always pray for the right things. God knows best how our prayers should be answered.

Discussion Points for Gospel:
Imagine that you are in the group of disciples who asked Jesus to teach them to pray. Are you surprised that this prayer seems so simple and easy?
Try praying one line of the Our Father each day, at various times all during the day. The first day, pray, “Father, hallowed be your name.” The second day, pray, “Father, your kingdom come.” And so on.
How can you hallow -- make holy -- God’s name? How can you help God’s kingdom to come? How can you appreciate and share daily bread and all the gifts you receive from the Father each day? How can you ask for forgiveness and give forgiveness to others?

Sunday Scripture Readings
Reflection on the Scriptures has become more and more a part of basic Christian spirituality. At times we would like to return to the Sunday Scriptures at home, but we do not have the missalette with us. At other times we may be interested in seeing just what came before or immediately after the reading for the day to gain more insights.
To encourage this encounter with the Scriptures, we will be including in the bulletin the scripture reading references for the current Sunday and the following Sunday. In addition, in our on-line bulletin we will have the actual links to the readings.

QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK
SEVENTEENTH SUNDAY IN
ORDINARY TIME

Today’s Gospel encourages us to approach God with confidence, to address God affectionately as “Father,” and to be persistent with prayer until those prayers are answered.
Adults: What are my deepest needs? What keeps me from bringing these needs to God and asking God for help in meeting these needs?

Children: What can I do each day to improve the frequency and the quality of my prayer?

DIOCESAN PARISH SHARE

Progress report

Next week we will receive proposals and estimates from Loudin Rumor Geothermal.
A different kind of Parish Share Campaign
When we gather for the Eucharist we bring our gifts for the celebration. Part of the offertory prayer contains this phrase “work of human hands.”
This is the vegetable season. You are invited to bring any of your produce to Mass to share with parishioners. There will be a table; we ask people to take something for themselves–even and especially if you haven’t brought anything.
There is a grace of allowing ourselves to receive kindness. Let’s see what happens.
Of course, we will not neglect the hungry. Food not taken will be distributed to the hungry.
2010 PARISH DIRECTORY
Our last directory was made in 2006. This year is the 50th anniversary of the dedication of CTK so we feel it’s time for a new directory. There is no cost to have your photographs taken, and you will receive a FREE 8x10 portrait and directory for participating.
There are appointments still available for this week; you may sign-up after Mass this weekend or on-line Monday, 9:00 AM through Friday 5:00 PM via the link on the parish website.
To make our directory a success we need volunteers. Contact Wendy at the office (592-2711) if you are interested in helping during the photography sessions, telephoning our parishioners, or with the layout.

ST. JOHN CATHOLIC CHURCH HOMECOMING is this Sunday, July 25, at the church on Dutch Ridge Road in Guysville. Dinner (chicken or ham) will be served at noon. The cost of the meal is $7 per adult and $3 per child. Lots of good food, games and fun! Everyone is invited to attend.

LISTEN . . . IS GOD CALLING YOU?”
You’ll never regret saying “yes” to His call to serve as a catechist (teacher or aid). If God is nudging you to lead a group of learners contact Nancy Denhart for more information, ndenhart@ctkathens.org or 740-590-3302. Catechists are needed at all levels pre-K through adult. Come share your talent and assist in bringing Christ to others.

If your child is involved in a fall sport or activity that will keep them from participating, please still register. We offer simple resources for you to use at home to cover the missed material.

LITURGY BITS AND BYTES
 Holy Water

Each time we enter the church we bless ourselves with holy water. That rite is meant to remind us of our Baptism. Baptism is the way that we became part of the community of the faithful. It was our entrance into church (the people of God). It was the way that God made us God’s children, brothers and sister of Jesus and of one another. So each time we enter the church we make that sign of our faith. The font or fonts at the entrance to the church contain holy water. It is the water that we use to renew our faith and the water we use to baptize. Those who use holy water as part of their family prayer can request water to take home.
