TWENTY-SECOND SUNDAY
OF ORDINARY TIME

August 30/31, 2008

What obstacles do you encounter in your discipleship?

Gospel Reflection (Matthew 16:21-27): Jesus corrects Peter who did not understand when Jesus said he would go to Jerusalem to suffer, die, and rise again. Peter, like many others, expected Jesus to be a conquering Messiah. Then Jesus tells Peter that he is not judging by God’s standards but by man’s. Peter had not yet realized that Jesus was going to save us by the cross, and that every disciple must also accept the cross. It will be a part of the life for all his disciples, for all who follow him.

Discussion Points for Gospel: Why did the workers at Ground Zero after 9/11 take a cross-shaped piece of the building that collapsed and place it over the ruins in New York City? Why has the word cross come to mean suffering and sacrifice? What did Jesus show us about suffering? What cross do you think you or others have to carry right now? How can you show you are willing to carry it?

Sunday Scripture Readings
Reflection on the Scriptures has become more and more a part of basic Christian spirituality. At times we would like to return to the Sunday Scriptures at home, but we do not have the missalette with us. At other times we may be interested in seeing just what came before or immediately after the reading for the day to gain more insights.
To encourage this encounter with the Scriptures, we will be including in the bulletin the scripture reading references for the current Sunday and the following Sunday. In addition, in our on-line bulletin we will have the actual links to the readings.

QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK
Twenty-Second Sunday of Ordinary time

We cannot help but sense in today’s Gospel the intensity of Peter’s argument with Jesus and of Jesus’ disappointment in Peter. Even though Peter misunderstood, his friendship with Jesus is deep. It is from such a relationship that genuine faith flows.

Adults: In what ways might I have allowed my faith to become a matter of routine and mental assent rather than a personal relationship?

Children: How has Jesus’ love for me allowed me to do difficult things?

LITURGY BITS AND BYTES
  Receiving the Body of Christ

Although some continue to receive on the tongue, common current practice is to approach with one hand cupping the other, both with palms up. This is a gesture of supplication and receptivity, of asking to receive and of being open to receiving.

RESPECT LIFE
On the eve of the Pope’s visit to the United States, it was reported that he had experienced the horror of the Holocaust first hand in the death at Nazi hands of a cousin with Down Syndrome. A Holocaust expert has noted that the medical crimes of the Holocaust “started with the acceptance of the attitude basic to the euthanasia movement, that there is such a thing as a life not worthy to be lived.”
